Kilworthfox Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 Admittedly I am posting this on the evidence of yesterdays performance, not the Southampton or QPR ones. Before going into the Coventry game the team had managed 27points from 26 games. As I stated in my look to cov at home thread we have to judge the team Holloway builds from yesterdays game. Now I know everyone points to Palace under Dowies an ugly **** and Sunderland under Keane as sides who have great 2nd half of the seasons and go up. I am not suggesting that going up will be the best thing for the club, but it would not hurt financially. However a performance like yesterdays has made my mind wander to what if we could do that every week? I am optimistic by nature and may need to be put back in check! I am expecting to go to Naach and get 3 points if we can field the same side or better next satdi. No doubt in my mind at all! I would also say the thing everyone says that every team in this division can beat another on their day. All I can think is that our day will come much more often in the 2nd half of the season than it did in the 1st half Lets look at the facts! We are 11 points off of the playoffs with 19 games to go. Total of 57 points up for grabs. We can get a total of 87 points. Last season Southampton finished 6th with 75 points 2006/2007 final standings (select tab 2006/2007). Where will we drop the 12 points? So how many points will we get from the remaining fixtures? A Norwich WIN H Palace DRAW they are in good form! A Blackpool WIN H Bittermouth WIN will they have 11 to play us? A Watford DRAW they are poor at home H Norwich WIN A Kovscum WIN Certainly if today is anything to go by A Cardiff WIN they have not been great, neither had we tho H Preston WIN they are worse than we were H Bristol C WIN A Southampton Lose Good side, we never do well against them A W B A Lose Good side, and we will drop points somewhere H Hull WIN Although they are improving I expect to beat them H Scunny Utd WIN they are a poor side A Sheff Utd DRAW Who knows what you get with them H Colchester WIN they are a poor side too A Barnsley WIN we always beat them, even when we were awful H Sheff Wed WIN They were awful when we played them last but have improved, so have we though A Stoke DRAW tough place to go, on their day they are as good as any. Total 43 points from 19 Final Total 73 Prediction 8th however will be close if we could reach playoffs IMO
Fez of Mahrez Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 You silly bastard. I'd be well happy to finish top-half this season. That's it. We have six points too few at the moment to be dreaming of the play-offs.

"Try and fail, but don't fail to try."
Flynny Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 This time last season, didn't Kelly have us about 14th or so? I remember us all thinking playoffs were just about plausible when Milan was supposed to take over this time last season. Hah. We've left ourselves way too much to do, unfortunately. I think we'll finish about 10 points off in the 10th-11th position I've thought we'd finish in all season.
Simon Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 I knew some mad idiot was gonna say this, just didn't think it'd be you Kilworth...

MPH Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 i reckon we will finish 8th. just in time for an all out assault next season and autmoatic promotion.
Kilworthfox Posted 13 January 2008 Author Posted 13 January 2008 I knew some mad idiot was gonna say this, just didn't think it'd be you Kilworth... I am a silly sod! Just want to believe!
WetFlannel Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 I knew this would start Now we have a squad, we have to get stability. Top half is certainly on, but were still 19th. Thats only just outside relegation, and if we lose our next game, were going to get dragged straight back into it. Our new target is just to take each game as it comes, and see where we end up. Anything above 15th this season will be a bonus for us.
Lillehamring Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 whilst i admire, and to an extent, share your optimism, i'm inclined to think that some of those 'wins' are more likely to end up draws... despite now having a midfield, and strikers in abundance, we still have, at best, an inconsistent defence, at worse, as we have seen a few times this season, a catastrophic mess at the back. we also need our luck to change quite dramatically, as we have suffered for some shocking decisions and footballing weirdness this season...we also need to be injury and suspension free... to many ifs and buts for my liking, BUT IF things go our way... who knows.
Kilworthfox Posted 13 January 2008 Author Posted 13 January 2008 Read my 1st post! I have suggested it is a possibility not what I believe is a certainty. I have stated my prediction of 8th, with the possibility of coming close.
MikeyT Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 I think its great to be that optimistic, and yes yesterdays performance was unrecognisable to what we have seen down here for a while, but we still have to remember that its only one game! I think realistically we want to be looking between 10th and 13th spot this season, then really focusing on the playoffs next season!! I can see good things happening for city, if things do progress the way they started yesterday! But also, we have to remember that Cov looked Appalling yesterday!! BLUE ARMY!!!

Unfortunately the stats don't agree at all with what you have written here. We have a defence which is amongst the best in the league and we have a mid and attack worthy of a performance we saw yesterday!
Simon Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 I am a silly sod! Just want to believe! I'd love to too, just can't see it happening! If we were maybe 6 or 7 points better off I'd say fair enough, I just think we've got a bit too much to do. Reckon we'll finish between 10th-12th.
MikeyT Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 yes, but for the first time in a long long while, this was perhaps more to do with us MAKING them look appaling... Good point! I think its just me not being used to watching us play so well!

Reckon we'll finish between 10th-12th. agreed, I think we will finish 8th or above if we had 5 - 10 points more more people would agree with the playoffs remark. Then again its only 11 points!

We have a defence which is amongst the best in the league and we have a mid and attack worthy of a performance we saw yesterday! um, i agreed that we have a good midfield/attack but as far as our defence is concerned, i described them as inconsistent... there have been several games this season (someone i'm sure will point them out for me ) where our back four simply haven't turned up and we have been stuffed... this could very likely still happen in the remaining games, yes we have a good defence, but to finish the season practically unbeaten requires them to be good every game which they simply are not...
mat_j101 Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 It was only one game!! Im pretty sure this is the start of a revival for us, but it was only one game. Lets not jinx it with possible playoff talk etc!!! I would be extremely happy if we finish in the top half, providing we play some decent football for the rest of the season, then next season we can give it a go. I do have to say thought, Holloway is proving to be just the man we need. Hes made some solid signings, and for once i actually agree with what a Leicester manager is doing!
maddog Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 I just hope we go on from this win with another win, then another win, followed by another win, then 3 more wins. If we can win 16-18 of the remaining 19 Championship games we should win The Championship. Around 12-15 wins out of 19 to reach the play offs. Its still possible you know I rekon 13 wins should be enough for 6th place. If we play like we did against CovScum every game we should do it. If we win the next 3 or so games i will start getting excited. Look at Palace. They were below us not so long ago and now they are in the play off places. We could easily go a 13 game unbeaten run like they did why not?
morris1234 Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 what was that website where you put in what you thought future results would be and it showed you the league table and where everybody would be if youre predictions actually happened???

LeeCovFox Posted 13 January 2008 Posted 13 January 2008 Play offs I really can't see, but I do think that a top half finish is realistic based on yesterday's display and the promise of more players joinig this week and throughout the window. One thing I will say though, I'm really starting to get excited about next seasns prospects. I have no doubt that we could be on course for a chamionship challenge, alongside QPR and perhaps Wolves if they swap McCarthy for Allardyce, which is what some rumours seem to be suggesting might be the case.
