Rincewind Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 On now BBC2. About how thousands of people emigrated to Australia for a tenner between 1945 and 1972. May be interesting. Some are telling their stories.
DB11 Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 My Grandpa was going to do that (I remember him telling me). Then he didn't (I don't remember why).
Unit Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 My Grandpa was going to do that (I remember him telling me). Then he didn't (I don't remember why). That's quite a story! Why was it only a tenner? i can't be bothered to read/watch anything
DB11 Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 That's quite a story! Why was it only a tenner? i can't be bothered to read/watch anything He told me that too. Because they needed skilled people (he was a coal miner)
Matt Posted 2 February 2008 Posted 2 February 2008 My Auntie and Uncle did it with there son and daughter, They were farmers. I think they got a good deal tbh. My Aunties still alive and going strong at 90, my uncle died. It's quite funny tbh, I'm closer to my family over there than the family that live in the same town as me.
Rincewind Posted 3 February 2008 Author Posted 3 February 2008 It cost a tenner because they wanted the skilled labour. One blokes a millionaire now. Bought a plot of land and expanded it to a holiday. Before this they only had the crims we forced to gop over there so they wanted some honest people. One woman went into a butchers and asked how much she could have ' You can have the bloody lot if yer want lady.' She was told. She'd been used to rationing. They wern't that welcome at first. Called 'Bastard poms' Some are still referred to as English after living over there yrears. The ones that came back to England then went back were knowb as Goonerwang Poms. The migrants were kept to just British fotr a few years but they still wern't getting enough labour so they let others from other countries in. Which is why they have a lot of Greek and Italions over there and Asian Chinese/
