Webbo Posted 22 February 2008 Posted 22 February 2008 I see that The Observer is giving away a DVD of 'La Dolce Vita' on Sunday. It's a film I've always wanted to see but never got round to. Not being a natural Observer reader, is it worth buying?
MC Prussian Posted 22 February 2008 Posted 22 February 2008 Not your usual popcorn flick, that's for sure. If you can spare the time and give it a go, do it. Any classic is worth watching just for the sake of it (at least they do teach me a lot). Especially with an Italian acting talent like Mastroianni and that blonde Swedish bombshell Ekberg.

Zingari Posted 22 February 2008 Posted 22 February 2008 it's nothing like as good as the english version , "the good life" with tom and barbara good, as a middle class couple embarking on a hilarious attmpt at becoming self sufficient in leafy surbiton
Bellend Sebastian Posted 22 February 2008 Posted 22 February 2008 All I know is that there's a film poster of it in Loaf and it looks a bit like Sam Allardyce doing some bird from behind

Webbo Posted 24 February 2008 Author Posted 24 February 2008 Well I bought the Observer today instead of my usual Mail, just to get the film. Some of it was very interesting although it was just as prejudiced as the Mail (all be it in a different direction) but that's understandable as it's aimed at people with those views. On the minus side the soduku puzzle was far too easy. Back to Mail next week for me.
Webbo Posted 25 February 2008 Author Posted 25 February 2008 Not your usual popcorn flick, that's for sure. I wish you'd just said crap. There's 170 minutes I'll never get back. Serves me right for trying to be intellectual. Next time I buy a paper just for the free DVD it'll be 'Honey I shrunk the kids'.

I mean, the most common difficulty is that today's viewers are no longer used to films of that length and tend to label them "boring", "dragging" or "too abstract". Although, I admit close to three hours IS an eternity in movies...

He spends time with Anita Ekberg they walk barefoot in the fountain then he takes her to her hotel, we never see Ekberg again. He sees his father, they go out together, he feels ill, he goes home never to be heard of again. I just couldn't see the point. I appreciate that there was some anti-catholic sub text in it , but if I hadn't read about it first I would never have spotted it.
