Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 1 March 2008 Posted 1 March 2008 Did anyone watch the NME Awards the other night? Bar the hosts (James Cordon and Matthew Horne) it was herrendous. Thank the Lord Jesus Christ for Mani and Bobby Gillespie reminding me that not all indie/rock music is about contrived poseurs who care more about their fooking hair/make up than they do about putting out anything that sounds remotely different to last weeks over-hyped "next big thing". It seems to me like the lot of them are in it for the "trend", and I feel that my opinion was emphasised when the Manics received the God-like Genius Award. Only a handful of people stood up to give them applause. James Dean Bradfield has more talent in his little finger than Patrick Wolf could ever wish to have, and it just made me really mad to realise that most of the people nominated for these awards were all such insufferable, unoriginal bellends. The awards used to be exciting and artists got recognised for their musical output, but categories such as "Blog of the Year" have cheapened the event, as has the fact that very few of the nominees are not commercially successful. It's partly the magazines fault for pushing and promoting the same crap week after week.
lildave3 Posted 1 March 2008 Posted 1 March 2008 The event was fairly shit, you're right. As was the crowd. The hosts were alright though, although everytime the backstage presenter (the guy out of Shameless) spoke he made me cringe. What an awful choice.

Never take NME, or NME readers seriously. And as for the awards, Arctic Monkeys - Teddy Picker best video?? Are you having a ****ing laugh, it was a brainless performance video, and it's not even their best video of the year!! Have you seen the Justice - D.A.N.C.E video? One of the most creative videos i think i've ever seen! Here's the link just cuz if you haven't seen it, it's awesome. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=A8bwZf3vXjg But anyway yeah those awards were sh*t, although i was pleased to see Glasvegas get that award because they are all about the music, and they are exactly the opposite of what you were just talking about. I did like the bits at the start where James Cordon and Matthew Horne ripped the kooks, klaxons and Kaiser chiefs.

As much as I like the Arctic Monkeys, I think they were shortlisted for too many awards, again, probably because they are the ARCTIC MONKEYS, and was surprised to see Justice nominated because their music differs to most of the shit on show. The awards completely contradict what's in the magazine. For example, Kate Nash received awful reveiws when she first appeared (and quite rightly so), but a bit of success later and she's picking up awards. I also have a problem with her because she said the Muse shouldn't have picked up Best Live Band. She is wrong.

She completely ruined 'A New England'.

Trav Le Bleu Posted 2 March 2008 Posted 2 March 2008 There hasn't been a decent music mag since Melody Maker went under. Sad really
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 2 March 2008 Author Posted 2 March 2008 Only because her boyfriend is in The Cribs. I know and I dont care. Muse are untouchable live performers. Also thought I'd better mention that in my eyes, the IT Crowd should have won Best TV Show, but alas, the award went to The Mighty Boosh because everyone who voted wants to bum Noel Fielding and believe that the world revolves around Camden. Even though the third series was a massive let down.

Never Mind The Buzzcocks should have won.

Finchy Posted 3 March 2008 Posted 3 March 2008 Yeah, Simon has definitely won me over. Still not as good as Lamarr but he is really funny. He was so harsh to Anthony Costa from Blue .

Finchy Posted 3 March 2008 Posted 3 March 2008 Actually, the winner of Best TV Show, wasn't even nominated and that was Flight Of The Conchords. By far the funniest and most original thing on TV.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 3 March 2008 Author Posted 3 March 2008 But Noel Fielding is in The IT Crowd Yeah, but his character in that is a bit of a bit part, and he doesn't really play a character that will make young girls "swoon", if you will. He also doesn't name-drop bands like "The Horrors", who are, at best, appalingly, cripplingly shit. I just think that the second series if the IT Crowd was refreshingly different, taking the characters out of the office and putting them in situations where the awkwardness is brilliant.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 4 March 2008 Author Posted 4 March 2008 Serves you right for watching an award show. Good point. Although I did watch the Lareus sports awards the other night and to present they had the dream team of Cuba Gooding Jr and Steve Rider form Grandstand. All this with Vladamir Putin sitting in the front row of the audience.
