davieG Posted 30 March 2005 Posted 30 March 2005 Artical Curtesy of Square football Steve Guppy’s career is really the tale of two managers- one who used him extensively and another who brought him in then failed to play him. Martin O’ Neill had the left winger on the staff at Wycombe Wanderers after he was purchased from non-league soccer – Guppy was part of the squad that took Wycombe into the Football League- and then brought him to Leicester City and then again to Celtic. In August 1994 Kevin Keegan took Guppy from Wycombe to Newcastle United but then bought a host of star names to fuel his Geordie Revolution and Guppy couldn’t get a sniff of a game. After only a few months he went to Port Vale in search of first team action and put himself back in the news by forming an exciting wing pair with the right-sided John McCarthy. With his form returned he rejoined O’Neill at Leicester and enjoyed the most productive spell of his career; not a pacy winger, Guppy relied on guile and the early ball into the box to make a telling contribution. He was an integral part of O’Neill’s success as Leicester became an established Premiership side and League Cup winners in 2000. Kevin Keegan noticed him again and gave him an international debut in a friendly against Belguim in October 1999. Though the match ended in a 2-1 victory Keegan never gave Guppy another chance, yet another player lost in the England left side Bermuda Triangle. Keegan’s actions were mystifyingly similar to his attitude at Newcastle. As consolation, when O’Neill went to Celtic he took the winger and Neil Lennon from his old club and both won Championship medals. After Glasgow, Steve Guppy came back to brief spells at Leicester, Leeds and Stoke City before a nostalgic return to the Chairboys. He left Wycombe by mutual consent to end his career on the roster at DC United of the American MLS League where he has played in their pre-season friendlies and is expected to start in the new campaign. At 36 he plays alongside wonder boy Freddy Adu who is fully twenty years his junior.
Benji Posted 30 March 2005 Posted 30 March 2005 i remember him most fondly for them goals at filbert street they were where he cut in from the lleft then took a right foot shot in the bottom right hand corner he did it in a couple of matches very close together, i think one was forest but not sure of the other was a great crosser of the ball though no doubt about it
stez Posted 30 March 2005 Posted 30 March 2005 steve guppy was one of my all time favourite players, being a non-pacey winger myself. also i think his sister was in porn films

SamuearlJackson Posted 30 March 2005 Posted 30 March 2005 if you take a look at the highlight videos of the o'neill era it is amazing to see how many goals we scored from guppy balls into the box.
Jonbluefox9 Posted 30 March 2005 Posted 30 March 2005 I remember him getting a lot of stick towards the end of his first spell with us. That was a great shame because people seemed to have forgot what he'd done for us in the previous seasons. I'll remember his goal at home against Spurs where the commentator said 'The word emphatic is hardly adequate'.

Chandler Posted 31 March 2005 Posted 31 March 2005 Aye, and I remember the 'legend's' solitary cap, given grudgingly and belatedly by Keven Keegan who was desperately looking for a reason NEVER to pick him again. And KK was eternally grateful to one player ever after for giving him that reason. Just near the end of his international experience against Belgium at the Stadium of Shite, Monsieur Guppy was loitering with intent near the Belgian goal. A big hunky England forward bore down the left. Instead of squaring to the debutant, leaving him a simple tap-in, the hunky forward, somewhat uncharacteristically, decided to go for glory himself...and missed. Peep went the final whistle on Guppy's international career. The name of the saboteur? Step forward Mr Heskey...

He had a terrific cross on him and he also scored some belters too. As Benji says, where he cut back onto his right foot and curled it into the far corner - some fantastic moments
Simon Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 Steve Guppy= legend. Would have had more England caps if Keegan wasnt in charge as well...
foxesfan69 Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 Guppy was the left footed version of Beckham.... 86246[/snapback] Guppy was much more of a complete player than Beckham is, TBH comparing him to Beckham doesn't really give him justice.
