Louise Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 Forest one: EXCLUSIVE: Powell Gets Windies Call Nottingham Forest midfielder Darryl Powell has won an international recall - as a cricketer! The experienced midfielder is a surprise inclusion in the West Indies 'A' squad for their tour of England this summer. The 33 year old has played football for Jamaica and was a member of their squad for the 1998 World Cup in France. And he's now poised to return to the international stage and follow in the footsteps of former Scotland goalkeeper Andy Goram, who played both international football and cricket. Powell said: "I thought it was a wind-up when I received a letter telling me I had been selected for the West Indies 'A' squad but I've checked it out and it's legitimate. "I've always fancied myself as a cricketer. I started playing as a kid and have played Sunday League cricket to a pretty decent standard ever since. "I didn't even realise that the West Indies cricket authorities were aware of me. I'm flattered by their interest but a little bit shocked to be selected. "The tour of England is scheduled to last a month and won't cut across any of my football commitments, so things really couldn't have worked out better." Powell underlined his potential with bat and ball earlier this week when the Forest first team squad visited Trent Bridge, home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, for a game of indoor cricket. A spokesman for the West Indies Cricket Board said: "We've been aware of Darryl's potential as a cricketer for some time. "We have been monitoring his progress and decided he was worth a place in our 'A' squad after watching him in the nets at Trent Bridge earlier this week. "It's unusual for a player of his age to be selected for our 'A' squad but knowing the sort of character he is, we believe he will have a positive impact on our younger players - both on and off the pitch."
Louise Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 Burnley one: Freddie Set To Sign Burnley's squad is to be boosted by one in the coming months, after agreeing a deal to take on England and Lancashire cricket star Andrew Flintoff as a player. 'Freddie' is a keen footballer away from cricket and is a renowned and competitive striker with the belief and confidence that he could follow on in Ian Botham's footsteps by playing professional cricket and football. Flintoff is no stranger to Turf Moor and Gawthorpe either, as two years ago he spent time training with the squad in a bid to boost his fitness after injury ahead of the cricket season and impressed everyone at the club with his skill levels then. With England not set to go on tour until December when they visit Pakistan, Flintoff has agreed to sign for Burnley for the coming season and is prepared to help out the Clarets when available, although he is currently sidelined. Speaking about the signing, Chief Executive Dave Edmundson, former Secretary at Lancashire County Cricket Club said: "It's unlikely we'll see Fred in the Championship in the early months, at most a place on the bench, but a few games for the reserves under Mark Yates is a definite option. "So it might be worth just checking the odd team sheet in October or November next season to see if one A. Flintoff is listed at no.9! "Burnley will pay Lancashire CCC a match fee for each appearance made by Flintoff for the Clarets, together with a transfer fee of around £20,000 for his registration as a footballer. "It's good commercial sense because the replica sales of a Flintoff shirt will more than cover our costs."
Louise Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 Sunderland one: Black Cats travel in styleSunderland set off in style this morning when they took to the road for London. Mick McCarthy's men take on QPR in a crucial Coca-Cola Championship clash at Loftus Road tomorrow. And to help keep the players in tip-top condition, the Black Cats are using a revolutionary, state-of-the-art, eco-friendly team coach for the long journey to the capital. It is the first time McCarthy has used the new space-age coach, called the Polar Foil, in a bid to keep his players fresh ahead the game at Loftus Road. The plush, 17-wheeler super-bus, which runs entirely on energy generated from huge solar panels on its roof, includes an on-board penthouse apartment for McCarthy as well as an in-house cinema complex to keep the players entertained. Mick McCarthy and his team leave the training ground on Polar Foil this morning Other features include an exclusive on-board jogging track, a whirlpool spa, a sauna, jacuzzi and even a nine-hole putting green. Every player has their own sleeping area (some with motorway views), and to make life easier for Larry the driver, the StarTrek-style cockpit includes a satellite navigation system, a turbo-booster and is steered by an easy-to-use joy-stick instead of the old-fashioned steering wheel. "The manager is determined to keep the players in the best possible shape during their long journey," said an SAFC club spokesman today. "It's a great way for the players to travel and I'm sure Polar Foil will be used a lot in the future."
Louise Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 Cardiff one: UNFAIR ADVANTAGE?We can officially announce that the travelling Bluebirds will have an extra advantage going into Saturday's crunch Championship encounter at Home Park versus Plymouth. The whole Cardiff squad have been involved in intense training this week and have also been testing a radical new style of football boots for FIFA, to see if the alterations offer any benefit to the sporting professional. The new 'Accelerator' boots, supplied by a top sporting manufacturer follow the aerodynamic principles of the advanced running shoes worn by Olympic sprinters. We asked the views from the squad and coaching staff after three days of testing to see if there were in fact any benefits. "I couldn't believe it," said one. "From wearing the boots, I could actually feel that I was running much faster. I already wear cycling shorts under my City kit to speed me up a bit - and that on top of these new boots has increased my speed by a good few seconds." The Cardiff City kit man was also very impressed with the new style and hopes that testing will lead to a permanent switch. He told us, "They are excellent. Not only do they give the players a boost, but I can also now lay them out ahead of a match in a fraction of the time - they really are that quick."
Louise Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 Preston one: North End Pitch StolenPNE club officials are in shock after arriving at Deepdale this morning to discover that the entire pitch has been stolen overnight. North End's award winning turf has completely disappeared an action which has left many at the club scratching their heads and wondering how and where the pitch has gone. Groundsman Richard Eastham has been left totally gutted by the theft less than 24 hours after the pitch was shortlisted amongst the top three surfaces in the Championship along with Ipswich Town and West Ham United. "It's sod's law," said a bemused Eastham. "This was a perfect pitch and now it has totally disappeared. We have got an important game against Gillingham to prepare for but I'm afraid to say that there won't be much green around the Gills. It's turf luck!" Police are believed to be looking for a couple of dubious looking characters who were seen hanging around Deepdale Stadium at midnight last night. The pair are believed to have been wearing claret and blue tops and mumbling something about a disputed late penalty. Meanwhile in a surprise move Burnley's Turf Moor pitch has been a late addition to the shortlist for the Championship pitch of the year.
Phil Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 Town are close to securing a deal with Unilever Bestfoods UK, which will see 30,000-seater Portman Road renamed the Pot Noodle Arena. The deal also sees the UK food giant become the Tractor Boys' shirt sponsor for six years - starting in 2006-07. "The sheer size of this deal is an amazing opportunity," said Ipswich Town CEO Derek Bowden. "The combined value of both elements of the sponsorship is by far the biggest deal ever undertaken in East Anglian football." But Town's chairman David Sheepshanks said he had mixed feelings about the decision to name the stadium after a range of pot pasta's and recognises that many Town fan's will be unhappy about the new name. "I've been here a long time, a great many years and if we renamed the stadium Sir Alf Ramsey or even John Duncan it would roll off the tongue. But things have changed in football and this is a wonderful offer we have received - the biggest ever for football in this region. We must move on." The naming deal, which kicks in at the start of next season, will also see the installation of hot water dispensers both outside and inside of the stadium to allow fans to "Knock-up a Beef & Tomato Pasta on the fly," according to Sheepshanks. Embittered Town fans can consider their good fortune at an earlier decision by the club to turn down sponsorship offers from Lillets Tampons and US healthcare giant Zentox, manufacturer of branded haemorrhoid creams Last year it was exclusively revealed in a local paper that the new away kit would be pink, and people rang the club to register their discust.
morris1234 Posted 1 April 2005 Posted 1 April 2005 i dont know if anyone saw it but according to the daily sport today 'big'sam allardyce has signed a blind goalkeeper for next season.the only thing that could stop the deal is if the premier league will not allow the players dog to be teathered to the post so he can fetch the ball from the back of the net.
