I know people see the funny side of this guy and never having played for us, but we could have had another player on our wage bill with a lot more quality last season to make a contribution. Lets hope mandaric has learned from his mistakes and lets pearson and his scouts choose the signings from here on in.

dandannieldanok Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 It was a woeful signing at the time, not a surprise at all to see him go. Allen and Mandaric obviously saw Ajax on his CV and thought he'd bring total football here, forgetting to read on that he dropped right down to non-league football. Thankfully, with this decision and his signings so far, Pearson has put more thought into his signings.

It's pretty much a certainty that Mandaric let Allen and gis scouts choose Hellings. He was on trial at the Boro when Don MacKay was chief scout there, and then came to us pretty much as soon as we employed MacKay. So you can't really blame this one on Mandaric. Also, I discovered this quote in the "Hellings signs" thread while looking for a link to his signing: I know some have doubts on here but we have a good scouting setup here now and he will have been watched many times.I have a good feeling about this one... That dosn't mean we should ever have signed him. If we ever did any proper research on the guy as a footballer I'd love to know what it was. Hellings was tall and quite skillful on the ball but tended to want a touch or two too many within a team that often comprised the one and two-touch players of our highly successful Academy side. He really did try to adjust but, bottom line, he simply didn't have enough impact on matches. He'd scored or made the odd goal but there was nothing special you'd remember him for. He didn't have an eyecatching long-range shot, he wasn't a fast passer or a notably fierce tackler, nor did he read the game and spread long passes to either flank. He was just Joe Average. A guy who played his part at reserves level but never contested the Man-of-the-Match ratings or threatened to make anything special happen. I wish him well. The turmoil at the club during his time here wouldn't have helped his progress but he would only have come here for first team opportunities and you just couldn't see him getting any. So, altogether, a good move for all concerned.

We had an option to buy Adda., but as he only had 4 months left we let him train with us until his contract ran out and was then going to offer him a new contract. This meaning we would only have to pay a minimum transfer fee because of his age. Two days before his contract ran out he went to Portsmouth and two days later signed for them.

So, altogether, a good move for all concerned. This guy was a product of the Famous Ajax Youth set up, which means he should be awesome but Allen got it completely wrong. I seen him play once at Hinckley last year and he didn't really stand out. Was like a extra in a film.

So why did we want to sign him? Was it a form of social service or did people at the club really believe he had what it takes? I watched him lots of times and, yes, there were occasionally skills to marvel at. But they were more suited to a dancing fairy at some Christmas pantomime on ice. While colleagues made runs off the ball he'd be shimmying on the spot and even displaying the most wondrous tricks 15 yards back in his own half when almost everyone but the opposition had hurried on ahead. They didn't serve much purpose back there and were even a liability when he got dispossessed, which was frequently. To me he never did anything at pace. No first time passes, no quick pass-and-move contributions, no weaving runs to take him blazing past defenders. He was more a street entertainer than a footballer and although his efforts for the team improved over time I never saw him have great effect in contrast to Gradel who, for all his trickery, seems wholly focused on an end product. Presumably Portsmouth are convinced they can put Djiziri right and good luck to the lad. Stranger things have happened. If his skill can be married to speed, focus, attitude and positive outcome then the task should be easy.
