You reckon? It's always possible. City's Alan Woollett used to man mark some pretty special players out of the game in the halcyon days - he was like a limpet and if the guy he was marking had sat down in the centre-circle, Woollett would have stood or even sat beside him

I remember our alan, got raped over the man city goal,in the 69 cup final, but came out fighting through the 70s,great defender

woolett got raped?!!! thats a bit harsh :(

Alan Woolett eh - aah happy days. My recollection is of the crowd giving him 90 minutes of grief every single game and then giving the manager grief for selecting him but looking back he was a steady but unspectacular plodder alongside some real stars.

I understood that his career was ended prematurely when he was out walking his dog wearing a pair of borrowed wellies which caused a blister which went septic - how does this sort of rubbish stay in the memory?

he used to play in borrowed wellies!! apart 'woolett the bulet' he was also affectiontely known as 'sam the gardner' from the woodentops (old kids programme for the younger of you out there!) I thought he was a real legend, he seemed to get better as he got older. Bring him back!

But Gradel's had a lot of man-marking over the years and a lot of hammer too. If Stockport have got such a gifted man marker then I've no idea what he's doing in Division One. Cos Gradel is not just a talented footballer. He's intelligent, aware and quick and persistent. He'll take it all and test any marker til he cracks.

There was a particular example in the second half last night when he was waiting for a pass from Gilbert with his marker alongside him. Before the pass was made Gradel took off at full speed down the wing then stopped, checked out, hurried back 10 yards and took the pass in three or four yards of space with his marker nowhere.

And if that didn't work Gradel would, I'm sure, take his marker right across the backline alongside other defendes or even in no-man's land thus exposing a great chunk of space for others to exploit - people who are well aware of Gradel's capabilities and alert to such ploys.

I'm not saying it's impossible. But it's not the tactic I'd adopt unless I had the fastest, meanest and most-focused full-back imaginable for the job and I cannot imagine Stockport being so blessed, well organised as they are.

But if I were Pearson I would be making players aware of possible counter-measures if it did happen.

absolutely spot on

I live down the road from Alan Woolett, in West Knighton! Still walks his dogs every day and still looks like a steady unspectacular plodder. I heard a story that he turned down a lucrative contract in America in the seventies cos he couldn't bare to be seperated from his dogs. Don't make em like that any more.

That's how he learned to do his close marking - walking his dogs. :D
