I was just watching the birds in my garden and how the different types completely ignore each other and it made me wonder why don't they get it on with each other, dogs and cats do?

So why doesn't a Chaffinch

Fancy a Great Tit

for example?

I could be wrong, but I think your Chaffinch and Great Tit examples are both males. So that might answer the question

I think I can help. Different birds actually evolved from completely different species, in your example for instance the Chaffinch is a decendant

of the central African mountain gorilla [monkeyus hugeus]. Whereas the great tit evolved from the south pacific Mackeral [fijius findus].

Now obviously, gorillas are rubbish swimmers, and Mackeral can't climb trees and hence there paths would never have crossed.
