Refs and the call for respect

Mention of those Stoke tackles and the need for referees to cut out the cynicism in football reminded me of a question I wanted to ask after last night's youth match and one that arises in virtually every game played.

Port Vale committed a foul, the referee blew for a free-kick, Leicester went to take it and there was an opponent standing two yards away acting as a block and making no attempt to retreat 10 yards.

Why didn't the referee book him straight away?. It happens game after game and referees just put up with it. Is it so hard to get the message over that if you think anyone is deliberately trying to stall the taking of a free kick they will be booked for cheating/ungentlemanly conduct or whatever basket they want to put it in?

As for managers and coaches, don't they too have a responsibility to cut the cynicism out?

Yes they do, but sadly they will never admit it. They prefer instead to pass the buck, telling referees and administrators that it's their problem. I think with regards to the example you mentioned, referees need to be pedantic with this sort of thing for a while until it is eradicated from football. It's the same with diving, referee's can't pussy foot around with this, it ruins so many games and sends out an appalling examples to young kids, so why can't punishments against these cheats be harsher for a while until the game is rid of the problem? You can't just tell this generation of modern day playboy professional footballers just to start respecting others within the game, because they won't. Actions speak louder than words, and now is the time for the men in black to prove the truth of that adage.

This respect of referees thing is too narrow, there's a lack respect in all areas of the game player to player, players to fans and vice versa etc.

There's a massive lack of honesty and integrity in the game mostly on the back of so called professionalism, personally I don't see the connection or the justification that money means you have to be dishonest and disrespectful.

He'd be booked for 'Delaying the restart of play'. Has he actually delayed it sufficiently though or was it just the normal stuff that always happens.

It is a respect campaign and is for all areas of football, not just referees. It is just that referees will be the biggest benefactors :)

Has the campaign actually helped you though? I've seen no changes in clubs/players attitude really, although it's early days yet for grassroots football

No change in my opinion at our level

Leagues have got to sign up to the campaign first and then they will receive a pack to give to each team, which includes: 1 captains armband with the FA logo and respect on it, rope thing to rope a section off on the side of the pitch, a code of conduct and I dunno what else

Above supply level it is compulsary for Leagues to sign up to this (though I doubt they get the little pack with a captains armband lol!!) and that is where they have to do the handshake etc.

Btw County Cup games this weekend all Referees even at youth level have to do the lining up and handshake at the start of the game because all teams are under the respect campaign whilst playing a County Cup game. Can't wait to try and do this

That as maybe but it seems totally one dimensional and one way so far - Referees!

What a load of bollocks that is - let's have the players running out separately to do battle, the hand shakes should be at the end of the game.

Really? Who told you this? When the club phoned they didn't say anything

We have been told about this also , load of bollox in my opinion . No interest in shaking an opponents hand pre match . All county cup ties kick off at 11 this week and a minutes silence will be observed for rememberence sunday

Did you not get a County Cup handbook? It's in there. Plus it was reiterated and we were told how to do it properly at my RA Branch Meeting.

Didn't you say in this weekends ratings that referees were to blame for Gradel's play acting?

As for this respet campaign I agree with the principle, but it will take hefty fines and penalties for it to work, and this smacks of tokenism.

As for the stupid kids message before each game it makes me want to stab myself in the hand. I'm sure they changed the wording on Saturday from asking for no bad language to asking for no bad language in family areas though - wonder if there have been complaints?

DB11, If a player stands over a free kick in the instance described the caution is for "failing to respect trhe required distance at re-starts of play" and not for "delaying the re-start of play". :)

It can be that as well. It could also be for "unsporting behaviour." It is in the opinion of the referee.

And Deco gets sent off for trying to take the free kick quickly haha no justice!

Well if the referee told Deco to wait and then he kicks it, he is undermining the referee's authority and should be rightly cautioned.

Ye that's right :)

Yeah I saw it in the handbook but thought it only applied to adults games, no?

EDIT: I've actually read it properly now, and it does apply to all levels of the game
