Flynny Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 The other thing to mention about Cox is that he's not just a right-back. He's a bit of a midfield enforcer. The "get-stuck-in" brigade will love him because the recipient is likely to know about every tackle. There's nothing especially subtle thereafter. He just gives the ball short and simple to feet. But one clash yesterday was a classic. The ball was just off the ground. Cox and a Bristol player homed in on it at the same time and the collision was audible 20 yards away. There was nothing unfair about it but Cox is built like a pocket battleship and the Bristol lad finished rolling around in a big heap afterwards. It's perhaps an unfortunate phrase but there was never any chance of Cox pulling out! :D When I saw Cox against Hinckley he looked tidy enough and fully formed as a player. Shame. I hate not really being able to comment though, I can't wait to get to a game again.
Koke Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 If I remember correctly, we were having these exact conversations about Chris Powell before he had kicked a ball. Now he has silenced all of us with his resolute performances, and I'm sure given the time Marc Edworthy will do the same. Gilbert is back soon anyway I presume, so Edworthy will only be a back up.

But that doesn't disguise the fact that we need to look further ahead than veteran full-backs and should have had proper cover established or installed before the start of the season, not part-way through. The obvious place to look for progressive cover is in the youth set-up. Otherwise there's little point in having an Academy. And had Cox and O'Neill been used as our shadow players, and been given adequate involvement and opportunity to progress, I am quite sure that at least one of them would be well established as an alternative by now and we wouldn't have needed to disrupt our defence so dramatically, particularly when Gilbert got injured.
Koke Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 Yeah you're right, I do agree in principle that this was the perfect chance to introduce Cox or O'Neill to the team.
