Matt Posted 17 April 2005 Posted 17 April 2005 Sydney FC, the A-League's self-professed "glamour club", has signed former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke, the highest-profile player to join Australia's fledgling competition. While other clubs are playing pre-season friendlies against state league teams, Sydney is on tour in Dubai and it was from there that the club's president, businessman Walter Bugno, said it had captured the Trinidad international, a Champions League winner with United in 1999. In snaring Yorke on a two-year deal reportedly worth between $750,000- $1 million a year, Sydney beat off clubs in the Middle East and English Championship. According to reports, Dwight was offered $4 million from a Qatar club to move there. The striker has always had a positive view of Sydney, having had holidays there many times. He is a close friend of former teammate Mark Bosnich, the former Socceroo goalkeeper, from Sydney. Bugno told Tribal Football.com that Yorke, 33, had signed a two-year contract with Sydney, starting from July 1. He will not be available for the club's world club championship qualifying matches, starting with the game against Queensland Roar on May 7. "We're delighted to sign Dwight after several months of negotiations," Bugno said. "His trip to Sydney last week was very telling. The Sydney FC fans played a massive part in convincing Dwight to join us. The response he received from the Sydney public over the two days he was there made a big, big difference." Yorke enjoyed several seasons at Aston Villa before Alex Ferguson took him to United. In recent seasons he has been something of a nomad, playing without much success at Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City. Even he's better than the current crap up front... -Anyone know who wanted him in the Championship?
