Smudge Posted 30 October 2009 Posted 30 October 2009 rather than starting a new thread....here is oslo's solution for improving bus routes...100kph during rush hour.... they are currently revealing plans for the city's infrastructure for the next 50 years... That bloke in the white van doesn't look impressed does he? All that expense and he's still stuck. That viaduct will need substantial repairs to the expansion joints over time, a la Midland Links in Birmingham.
Smudge Posted 30 October 2009 Posted 30 October 2009 about the lack of city centre space, (and controversial maybe,) but i think we should move the anachronistic outdoor market and open up the market place area as a plaza style centre piece . Like this?
Zingari Posted 30 October 2009 Posted 30 October 2009 Like this? yes , but not so many horses and people in fancy dress, and a bit more colour
CosbehFox Posted 31 October 2009 Posted 31 October 2009 is that what it is at the moment? A private arena which does dinners and shows featuring the likes of Paul McKenna and crappy productions of musicals. They had to rip out all the seating to do so. Anyways, it's gone quiet on the Youth Hub at the Haymarket. Although I believe the lease on the Haymarket is a minefield.
Ford Super Sunday Posted 31 October 2009 Posted 31 October 2009 It's nice, but they need to tear down that ugly, rusty, useless Bowstring Bridge to improve it.... Oh wait...
Smudge Posted 31 October 2009 Posted 31 October 2009 Leicester lacks the space to have a large public square, and much of our heritage has been bulldozed for modern carbunkles such as the Haymarket, and DMU. I have been thinking about what you said and have spent some time researching what Leicester looked like in days of yore. This map shows the layout in 1722 and the main street in the city was Highcross Street. The current High St used to be known as Swines Market. The photograph below the map is apparently the where the Clock Tower now stands, that large building was built c1750 and demolished in 1862. I think this picture was taken from "High Street" The tea and coffee mart on the left, I believe, was replace by the mock tudor building that stands today; and was known as the Eastgate Coffee House. I tried increasing the size of the map but Photobucket seems to limit it to this size. Use the zoom feature in your browser if you are having problems reading it.
lou Posted 31 October 2009 Posted 31 October 2009 Ahh that map is lovely to see! Look at all the trees! Thanks for posting it, that was really interesting
