Alexikokopops Posted 18 August 2009 Posted 18 August 2009 Nicely put.I genuinely look forward to going back. Pretty much all my mates have moved away so it's not even from a social point of view, it's more about memories and nostalgia. You walk through the streets and feel like you actually belong there. I often take the longer route back from the Walkers to St Margaret's Bus Station on a match day just so I can enjoy the city. I feel the same about Lincoln to be honest.
Lillehamring Posted 18 August 2009 Posted 18 August 2009 This has definitely happened to me. I moved to Bristol and was amazed at how shit it made Leicester look in every department. Didn't miss it in the slightest. And then whenever I'm back I'm damned if I don't start to love the place. It's irritating almost. You walk past a place and it's like someone shaking a snowglobe in your head and all these memories are dislodged. It's got its nice bits. Vicky Park is nice in the summer, bits of South Leicester are quite pleasant and our town centre isn't a disgrace. It feels mucky and run down and badly put together sometimes but depressingly, almost, I don't think there's more than about 6-8 cities in the country that are genuinely 'better'. Bit rapey...
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 18 August 2009 Posted 18 August 2009 Leicester.....the tenth biggest city in the UK. I think
Flynny Posted 24 August 2009 Posted 24 August 2009 Bit rapey... Better lit now. I really like around there actually, I half fancy seeing if I can do my 4th year here.
clare Posted 24 August 2009 Posted 24 August 2009 Title says it all really... I'd just like to know, for this damn University project, what your opinion of Leicester is... don't make it too long... just one short sentence that sums up what you think of it. And try and be serious... as much as many of you will want to put Leicester is a pile of shit, try to resist! Thanks. Leicester is my hometown and I will always be proud of that, but when I was 18 I knew I had to move to a bigger city, with more opportunities, nightlife and things to do.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 25 August 2009 Posted 25 August 2009 It's not the same Leicester that I grew up in, when life was much slower, and new developement minimal. Sad to see so much of it's history disappearing in the name of progress, and no doubt, backhanders!
Raj Posted 25 August 2009 Posted 25 August 2009 Goto Evington Rd in the evenings. Its like being in Eastern fcuking Europe. Bastard immigrants!

I can genuinely empathise with that. My old school'll be being knocked down soon, that'll feel weird.

CosbehFox Posted 25 August 2009 Posted 25 August 2009 I can genuinely empathise with that. My old school'll be being knocked down soon, that'll feel weird. Mine's been knocked down and replaced by something which looks like it belongs in Skins.

Flynny Posted 25 August 2009 Posted 25 August 2009 Shit happens - stuff changes - things move on: we don't live in a museum. My mistake, I was under the impression that if nothing ever changed my life would always remain as comfortingly dull as ever. You've really opened my eyes.

Flynny Posted 25 August 2009 Posted 25 August 2009 I feel sorry for the person who disagrees with you on a subject which might actually be important. I don't even disagree to a massive extent, I just don't think it's wrong to let yourself feel a pang of nostalgia now and then.
clare Posted 25 August 2009 Posted 25 August 2009 Ah, I'll always be a Leicester fan, no question! Lived in Leicester for the first 18 years of my life, and even though I do view the city as a lagging behind development-wise, I do get nostalgic about it when I return home after visting Leicester for the weekend. One thing's for sure, though. The walk from London Road train station to Gallowgate has got to be one of the most drab and dreary sights in the city centre. It feels a bit like a ghost town!

I quite agree with that, Happy memories are a wonderful thing to have, but it is even better when you can go back to somewhere, and find it has not changed too much. Nostalgia is wonderful!

Strangely enough, I moved from Leicester to Leeds, when I was quite young, and now have nostalgic memories of my time there, in Adel.

Shoppers bleedin Paradise... Must admit, love coming back to see rellies & footie but my oldest (18) came with me for the Swansea game and I have to say that she said the City Centre was a scary place even in the middle of the day! What a load of nutters wandering about.... Still would buy a mansion tho if won lottery

Lillehamring Posted 9 October 2009 Posted 9 October 2009 found this online.....oh dear oh dear oh dear i know space is at a premium, but that is ridiculous, and once again DMU pushing back the boundaries of architecture Building Design magazine, which awards the Carbuncle Cup to buildings considered unattractive, said the building looked like it was "shaping up nicely as a contender for the 2010 competition".In 2007, the magazine gave the award to Opal Court, in nearby De Montfort Street, naming it the worst new building in the UK and a "textbook example of the insensitive development".
