They can't hang on to him in the sense that any trust between him and the Blackpool Board will be irretrievably broken, so they could try and stop him managing anywhere else until his contract ran out but that will just be money down the drain on his salary and won't achieve anything, so all can really do is hold out for a decent compensation package.

How can he join another club without being released from his duties by his current club? They either have to terminate his contract willingly (which they might consider if they were retards) or release him in exchange for payment (the more standard route). And even if a compensation package is offered, he surely can't leave until the package has been agreed to and the contract formally ripped up.
