davieG Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 OK simple choice, assuming it's a 442 formation and we have, please God a decent holding midfielder, who would you play as our creative link man.
Scow Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 It has to be Hughes. Williams does have the talent, but he doesn't apply himself, and often goes missing when the going gets tough. At least Hughes is prepared to battle and seems to have more energy. Neither are the quickest, however, I believe Hughes supports the front men more effectively, and his distribution is more consistent.
Louise Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 Hughes. Williams played very well (I thought!) on Saturday, however that's one good performance out of a load of average/ok/poor ones. Hughes links better with the strikers and takes better corners. Williams drifts in and out of games and while I think he has skill I'm not sure if he's focussed enough, plus playing a defensive role for Forest for so long has gotten him mixed up on what he should be doing. Maybe he'd blossom with a better defensive midfielder beside him but Hughes just looks to have that touch of class and vision that Williams doesn't.
Chimp Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 If you're looking for a creative link man then Hughes, no question. I rate Williams, but more as a midfielder who disrupts the opposition play rather than one who creates opportunities for the strikers.
Ric Flair Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 Hughes. Simply because they are different players and i'm not sure what Williams best classification as a midfielder is. Hughes should play alongisde Williams in the centre if you ask me and if Williams has a poor spell then he should be dropped. He needs someone to put his place under threat and he'll then play to his potential. It's a myth that we need a defensive midfielder, that's not necessarily true we just need two midfielders that play consistently and can provide the attackers with quality throughballs, make forward runs to support them and have a good engine to track back aswell. Both players have this in their bag, it's time to put them together and work on them. PS Williams is the better corner taker in my opinion. Although Hughes hasn't taken that many for us that i've seen so far.

Don't like his free kicks either.
jordo11 Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 williams has been s**t this last 2 games and he need s to get him out the team if he plays like that
Wellman Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 Williams has done nothing to be honest this year. Hasn't really had 1 outstanding game for us, mind you he has scored 2 important goals, Blackpool and Reading. Hughes is a genius! He's definately the new Muzzy Izzet :D
john_lcfc Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 gareth williams is our friend is our friend is our friend gareth williams is our friend he hates forest hughsy hughsy hughsy.. only L1 sing these songs.. i remember the days when the players came on the pitch we sang all the names and they applauded u but those days are gone Its L1 for fun songs or nowhere I would play them both in the same team but to chose i would say hughes
Anish Posted 21 April 2005 Posted 21 April 2005 Hughes easily. I agree with Louise that William's corners are, for the most part, poor. They are floaters and are easy to defend and easy to catch for the keeper.
