Jimmy Posted 14 January 2009 Posted 14 January 2009 we all know the top teams are playing too many games which hurts the national team so why doesn't the FA do something so simple, bring the F.A. Cup in line with the League Cup. My idea is this, we scrap replays, ties are settled on the day with Extra time and Penalties used to decide them if needed, this works perfectly well in the League cup, it cuts down on fixture congestion, expenses for fans who have to pay too much in general as it is and adds more drama to the match as you know they can't just settle for a draw because 1 way or another it has to be settle there and then... anyway that's my idea what do you lot think?

Im temped to agree , i dont think the traditionalists wouldnt fancy the idea . The story of the smaller clubs bagging a replay and all the finance that comes with it will be no more but i think id edge that way
ACF Posted 14 January 2009 Posted 14 January 2009 Good idea, but i think not having the smaller clubs earning the replay would hurt the whole idea of the FA Cup

Jimmy Posted 14 January 2009 Author Posted 14 January 2009 Its the romance that makes this competition in fairness , widely known as the best cup competition in the world . Although back to your point id lean towards going with the idea you could still have the romance, when the small club catches them on an off day instead of managing to get a replay they could get the extra time winner/shoot out victory ...
Darkzzz_ Posted 14 January 2009 Posted 14 January 2009 I would rather it be one game. Although I do like to see the smaller clubs earn a replay. But if it went down to a vote, I would opt for one game.
davieG Posted 14 January 2009 Posted 14 January 2009 Well it's been like it since about 1960 so I don't see the problem, and back then you could sometimes have 4/5 replays. As for the bigger clubs well they've got enough players to cope with it and it they want to reduce the number of games cut out a load of the UEFA & Champions League games because that's the cause of most of their problems.
Asha Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Wouldn't agree with this personally. For the smaller teams, earning a replay away at a big side is massive for them. Say if we got a big team at home, knowing a draw would take you to their ground is something special and so what if it adds to the fixtures...it's still only 2 games in 7 days. I think if we're being honest, this probably IS just a reaction to the Tunchev injury.

The story of the smaller clubs bagging a replay and all the finance that comes with it will be no more but i think id edge that way I wouldn't fancy the idea, why do we have to do even more things to match the big clubs priorities? it'd be better for them to win the tie in the 1st place while they have the chance and get the extra prize moneyit's a knockout cup competition at the end of the day not some romantic fiction novel Well, the thing is, it is really. Everyone knows that's what they expect from the FA Cup, regardless of what the broadcasting companies may be trying to tell us. The amount of money generated from replays is of massive help to smaller clubs and sometimes gives the chance for average footballers to play at a big ground.
Finchy Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Might as well, FA Cup ain't what it used to be, it's just not a special tournament anymore. They play the semi finals at Wembley ffs, that is just ridiculous and it takes away everything special about FA Cup final day. It's just another cup now.
syston_fox Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Things like having to go through last night make me think that the replays should be abolished.... but then looking back, it was a good night out and most people there probably enjoyed themseleves even though the game left a lot to be desired. Also look at the fun we had at Fulham away a few years ago thanks to a hard fought draw in the original tie. Whilst they are a hastle at times, they usually bring up some decent entertainment along the way. And think of teams like Exeter. They can say they took Man Utd to a replay which sounds a lot better than 'took Man Utd to extra time.' For me, the cup replays are one of the only bits of magic about the FA Cup remaining - it's a tradition that would be a shame to see taken away.
Uncle Albert Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Scrapping replays from the Cup would lose alot of attraction from it. Its another brilliant tie for small clubs and some off the lower Prem teams who will get a few more pennies for another tie. I remember Burton's banner after the draw they got with Utd, 'We're going to Old Trafford' not 'We're in the Fourth round', its special moments like that what the Cup would lose out on. Anyways if anyone has any doubts about the Cup replays then you should just ask someone who went Fulham in the 3rd round. Magic.
