Effectively forcing the guy to retire was totally out of order and far worse than anything he said. Had he been charged with bringing the game into disrepute there might have been a case if he couldn't or wouldn't substantiate his claims. That's the normal procedure for someone making unguarded comments and, while I'd often disagree with it, you can see that a man employed in football could be expected to fly a flag for the game rather than tearing it down. But while a ticking off and two weeks suspension might be justified, effectively barring him from his job was diabolical. It smacks of saying "one word out of line and we'll destroy you" a principle which, if applied to politics or business would mean a whole heap of shit never surfacing to be cleaned up. In other words such actions write a passport for corruption. Bennett's comments were entirely general rather than specific, no-one was libelled and if the law of the land pevented him from elaborating or justiying his claims, why shouldn't he leave it at that? In time his remarks would have just become part of football's folklore. Some would believe him and others would say he's offered no proof whatsoever. It's just like people talking about bungs. We all know it goes on but that it's hard to prove. People might be advised to say nothing, especially with the way football is so relentless in protecting its own and its image. But that doesn't mean the law of the land should allow people to be victimised for exercising their supposed right to (relative) freedom of speech if they so choose to use it. Not that I expect support on this. Free speech has been constantly eroded in the lifetime of this government and few seem to give a shit.

He is a joke. You don't deserve any referee with that sort of attitude. He wasn't just put there ya know? He stared off on parks football and worked his way up. He is one of the elite referees in England and whether you agree with that or not, it doesn't really matter.

I'm not interested in being entertained by referees mistakes - thats not what i watch football for. I watch it to be entertained by the players, and unfortuantely its normally the referee thats doing the entertaining with poor decision after poor decision.

And what would the game be like with no referee? The referee makes a lot more correct decisions than wrong ones and I bet you don't even know half of them are wrong before looking at a replay!!
