davieG Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 PLYMOUTH side Activate under-16s girls will compete at Leicester City's Walkers Stadium after winning the Tesco South West finals. Activate will now battle it out with fellow regional winners Manchester United, West Ham United and West Brom on May 17 to see if they can be crowned champions of England. If they do that they will then be chosen to represent England against teams from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at Bolton's Reebok Stadium. The city side, coached by former Plymouth Argyle youth development officer Peter Distin, are enjoying an impressive season. They have already won the league and cup in their Devon Junior Minor League and had qualified for the South West leg of the Tesco Cup after winning the Devon County final. TIN.adverts.adWriteDC('article-detail-impact-tile', '452x118'); Their DJM Cup success and their South West final win came within days of each other. And, even more impressively, Activate did not concede a goal in five matches to win the regional Tesco Cup final at Filton College in Bristol. Lauren Miller was also voted goalkeeper of the competition, Becky Jarvis best defender and Jodie Martin the top striker. Distin, who started Activate 15 years with just an under-10s boys team, said: "What the team has achieved this season is massive. "We are delighted to have won the Tesco Cup South West final and progress to the next stage of the competition. "The team played in last year's competition but narrowly missed out on a place in the national final, so it is great to go one step further this year. "The girls played really well as a team and are all looking forward to playing at the Walkers Stadium on May 17. "We are going to go up there and really go for it." Distin, who is the Devon under-18s girls' manager, was keen to praise assistant coach Claire Watson for all her efforts this season. Activate have produced some of the best young female footballers in the city over the last few years, including current England under-19 and under-17 players Chloe Roberts and Jemma Rose. THE Devon Women's Football League is now accepting applications for membership for 2009/2010. Applications to join the League should be made in writing on club headed paper and should be accompanied by a one-off entry fee of £30. Please include relevant information about your team including details of home ground and facilities (please note the league requires changing rooms, hot showers, toilets and a supply of drinking water) and officer contact details. Membership will be decided at the league's AGM being held in Exeter on Thursday, June 11. All teams submitting an application will be invited to attend the AGM and will be given an opportunity to introduce themselves. More information can be seen on the league website www.devonwomensleague. co.uk/newteam or by contacting secretary Ruth Willans on 07891 050 278 or by emailing [email protected] A special supplement featuring all the DJM Cup finalists will be printed by The Herald on Saturday, May 16.
