Champions League problem for FA

Recommended Posts

Posted

At the start of the Season UEFA granted 4 places to English clubs for the 2005/2006 champions league competition and the FA Premier League stated that the teams finishing in the top 4 places would qualify.

Recently UEFA have stated that the winners of the Champions league do not have an automatic right to enter the following season which means that Liverpool could win the League but not qualify. UEFA have said that the FA do have at their discretion the right to substitue Liverpool with the team finishing 4th in the premiership. The team most likley to finish 4th are ....... Everton!!.

So the FA could say to Everton, sorry chaps it's the UEFA Cup for you and give thier place to Liverpool.

Those with long memories will remember that the year Everton last won the Division 1 Title was the same year English clubs were banned from Europe, and the main course of the ban, Liverpool fans at Hysel. So once again Liverpool could stop Everton playing in the main European competition.

What should the FA do if Liverpool do win the champions League

I think it's only fair that whoever finishes 4th qualifies for the Champion's League.

Liverppol will have to pay the price for their inconsistency in the Premiership.

It would be a disgrace for them to disallow Everton. The top four teams should qualify, end of story.

Agreed. Qualification is a reward for consistency.;) Bad luck on Liverpool though. If they meet Milan in the final, frankly I do not expect Liverpool to win so this whole debate will probably be moot. :D:D:thumbup:;)

Liverpool knew at the start of the season that to qualify for next season's Champions League, they would need to finish in the top 4. If they have elected to focus on winning this competition at the expense of league form, then that's their tough luck.

It would be unfair on an Everton side that will have qualified fairly and squarely. Yet again.

It's got to be Everton.

UEFA should have made a provision for the winning club finishing outside of qualification places, especially as they now allow entry to teams who have not one their respective club championship.

I think it's conceited that they never considered this in the first place.

The team that finishes 4th in the league should qualify for the champions league, end of chat.

I wonder what the FA will come up with...

decision made! liverpool will have to finish 4th to qualify for champions league! only possible outcome really you can't move the goalposts right at the end of the season!

The Football Association has confirmed the Premiership's top four will qualify for next season's Champions League.

The decision will come as a blow to Liverpool who could win the competition this season and not be able to defend the trophy if they finish fifth.

Everton are currently in fourth place in the top-flight and are three points ahead of the Reds with a game in hand.

But the FA says it will lobby Uefa for a fifth Champions League place if the Reds beat AC Milan in the 25 May final.

The decision was recommended by FA's professional game board after a meeting at Soho Square on Thursday and it has been endorsed by the main body of English football's governing body.

A statement on the FA website said: "This will not be changed whatever the outcome of Liverpool's Champions League Final in Istanbul on 25 May.
