purpleronnie Posted 26 June 2009 Posted 26 June 2009 Having spent 6 months in the states what hits me when I come home is how great the music is from britain, such diversity so much talent, especially it seems but women singer songwriters, just a huge abundance of talent, we really are leading the way again. Thats all....
Jay Posted 27 June 2009 Posted 27 June 2009 I don't just think it's women songwriters it's every songwriter for such a small island we don't do bad but credit must go to the way music operates in this country massive numbers of independent record labels constantly stretching the boundaries, small local venues putting on new and upcoming bands and so on. being a small country it's easier to spread the word, plays shows all over the country etc and develop that way. Without witnessing the scene in America I imagine it's pretty different with a heavy reliance on media exposure for a band to break MTV etc which obviously means a major label which in turn means radio friendly, heavily produced corporate rock and so on. I imagine for bands and song writers in America it can be very difficult and sometimes impossible to actually get out of your own state without a serious amount of money. I love American music and they do have some great indie labels and so on but maybe due to the actual size of the place it must be extremely difficult to be seen or heard without sufficient backing
purpleronnie Posted 27 June 2009 Author Posted 27 June 2009 Yes, the music scene is so dull they never push for anything new, they do still look to the UK for new artists like amy winehouse and bands still have to come over here and have success before the American record companies sit up and take notice i.e. Kings Of leon. They are very set in their ways thats why r & b is so huge because almost all of it sounds the same and sells by the bucket load. Its great to see the festivals over here too because they dont have that in the US, loads of different bands all playing in the same place, most americans just dont get it, they tried to bring it back with woodstock 94 with terrible results.

I think Americans kind of fear change a little they like to be in control or controlled if you like excessive canned laughter on comedy shows is an example we are are probably a little more open minded when it comes to music, comedy, tv etc we also like to take a risk on things where as you say in General American music companies like to stick to what they know if it's making money, and instead of looking for the next big thing or a talented new band just want to repeat the last hit single. I believe they also like to take more artistic control with some artists and refuse to put out albums if they don't have a certain sound I think huge amounts of American bands travel over to Europe and many mention how different the reception is and how passionate people are for music in Europe. In the future I can see a huge number of American bands taking the NIN Trent Reznor route and putting out their own music with full control of what they do.

Bellend Sebastian Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 If anyone is desperate to hear a lovely example of female vocals, I can wholeheartedly recommend the God Help The Girl album. It would help if you like Belle and Sebastian, because it's basically them but with some different singers
