Ian Posted 6 May 2005 Posted 6 May 2005 I know he is 32 and probably does not fit into the CL long term plan, but he scored 17 goals for sunderland this season and has just been released! Might be a good signing for one year alongside Connolly.
Bedford Fox Posted 6 May 2005 Posted 6 May 2005 not a bad shout! but i dont think it will happen! he is to old and 17 goals isnt too many more than connolly got!
Wellman Posted 6 May 2005 Posted 6 May 2005 Marcus Stewart will play his last game for Sunderland against Stoke on Sunday. The 17-goal striker has been told that he will not get his contract renewed at the Stadium of Light. Stewart, who signed for the Black Cats three seasons ago, will leave on good terms after a heart-to-heart with manager Mick McCarthy this week. McCarthy confirmed: "Marcus is going. He came and asked me and I spoke to him. It was a difficult decision but it's all very amicable; he's comfortable with it and looking forward to a fresh challenge. "He's been terrific for the club and has had a brilliant season. He went through a goal drought but was still our best player by a mile. His movement and work-rate is phenomenal." Stewart, 32, is unlikely to have any trouble finding a new club after an impressive season with the Black Cats. His Sunderland career has been transformed under McCarthy after a hugely disappointing first year at the club, a time the striker describes as "the worst of my career". But he emerged as an important player last season as Sunderland finished third before losing in the play-offs. The former Ipswich man, however, has left his best until last, playing a key role in the Black Cats' promotion. "Marcus is one I inherited and he was disenchanted when I came here," said McCarthy. "But I gave him the chance and he's taken it. "We've had run-ins during the last two years, that's normal, but they have always been sorted out quickly. "It was a difficult decision to make but Marcus does not want the sympathy vote. The last thing he wants is to be here and not playing. "It's the best decision for him. He can move on and get football on a regular basis."
Benji Posted 6 May 2005 Posted 6 May 2005 just read that yes the age is a factor but i'd definitely have him at this club, would get you the goals that make the difference between mid table and promotion pushing which has been proven for sunderland this season
shen Posted 6 May 2005 Posted 6 May 2005 Who can forget his storming season in the Prem?! Still, I feel we've taken enough gambles on old players recently...And Stewart is no doubt a big wage-earner. Can't see CL being interested in him either.
Vardinhio Posted 6 May 2005 Posted 6 May 2005 I'd sign and start him up front with Connolly. I think he could do a good job here and defenitely has some kind of aura around him.
Knighton Matt Posted 6 May 2005 Posted 6 May 2005 my sunderland supporting mate tells me goals or no goals stewart is past it i can'tsee the value in signing him and i don't think he's the type of player levein will be looking at.
step Posted 6 May 2005 Posted 6 May 2005 Now we are talking, Marcus Stewart would do considerably more for us than Dion ever did. We need a mix of the maturity of the older players and the enthusiasm of youth in our team. Someone with his work rate and skills will lead by example and would be a brilliant signing for us. He certainly won’t turn into a Blake (journeyman) because he is on a one year contract so CL's reasons for not liking one year contracts should not apply. He is player I have rated for a long time and if he won’t come for a one year contract, offer him two years. I think he would be worth it, and so most of the Sunderland fans, check the link to the Sunderland message board to a thread with 115 messages of thanks and praise for him. http://www.readytogo.net/smb/showthread.ph...15&page=1&pp=10 Their general opinion of him is: Poor start to this season Getting old and to slow for the premier Paid to much A few are glad he is leaving Quality player with excellent skills Intelligent player Works hard Good influence on the young ones Seventeen goals this season A few think he can contribute in the premiership All think he can still do the business in the championship Get him in CL
Sparky Posted 7 May 2005 Posted 7 May 2005 dont get him cl , keep the policy of building a squad and not going for 1 season fixes
MON Posted 7 May 2005 Posted 7 May 2005 Offer him a trial first. Then if he impresses give him a one year contract, with an option of another.
TrickyTrev Posted 7 May 2005 Posted 7 May 2005 If we were to get promoted he would be 34 by the time we get into the premiership, hardly long term planning. Especially when another one of our strikers is 36. 17 goals is not an amazing total when you consider he is was in the best team in the division by a distance. I hope we pass on this one.
Little Nicky Posted 7 May 2005 Posted 7 May 2005 Haha, Micky is gettting a contract prepared at Coventry for him as we speak I bet! I like the guy, he's a good player but he doesn't fit the criteria we need to be looking at, someone more along the lines of 24-27 up front would be what I'd like to see, someone ith a bit of experience but not past it, and will have a few good years left in him!
cono Posted 7 May 2005 Posted 7 May 2005 i don't think we should sign him, his wage budget will be too high and i don't think he will play that often.
City Fan Posted 7 May 2005 Posted 7 May 2005 Apparently Bristol City are favourites to sign him! We need a goal scorer - Marcus Stewart fits the bill. Whether he is a good all round player or not, he can still stick the ball in the back of the net.....
Hazza Posted 7 May 2005 Posted 7 May 2005 He'll end his career at Bristol City because he supports them apparantely. I imagine that's what's given them the advantage as they'll be a few Championship clubs in for him.
Guest gam14 Posted 8 May 2005 Posted 8 May 2005 i think that we do need a striker like marcus stewart but i think that age and wages would be the reason levien wont sign him
