davieG Posted 17 September 2009 Posted 17 September 2009 PARIS (AFP) – The group stage of the Europa League kicks off on Thursday, with the trialling of five on-pitch match officials providing the biggest talking point prior to the start of the tournament. In the biggest change to the game since the introduction of the back-pass rule in 1992, two extra officials will patrol the area behind each goal on the lookout for penalty area transgressions such as diving and shirt-pulling. UEFA president Michel Platini has pioneered the idea and says it will be escalated to next season's Champions League and the 2012 European Championship if it proves effective. "One day players will give up simulating because referees will see them," said the former France international legend. "For years players have cheated because the referees were not of a good enough quality. "I am convinced, with the extra officials, that if you have referees close by it will prevent players from simulating and they will take the right decision." I missed this, is it posted anywhere? The wrong approach. If people thought that video replay split the 'professional' game from the rest then this really does. Who can afford or even find 2 extra officials. Referees currently fail to punish diving even when they are within sight of it I can't see that an official behind the goal is going to do better and what if he's the 'wrong' side of the goal. Will this 4th official be able to question the referee on say a hand ball because from my experience unless players complain they rarely consult the current Asst. Ref. I suspect all we'll get is more complaining groups of players. If it's to judge whether a ball has crossed the line use video technology. If it's to determine cheating then like other 'bringing the game into disrepute' charges do it by studying the video after the game if someone complains. Ok you can still lose out from penalties but that happens in all sorts of other ways.
