davieG Posted 10 October 2009 Author Posted 10 October 2009 Won 4-2 after being 2-0 down at half timeto 2 goals conceded from corners. Cracking 2nd half with some well taken goals.
FoxyLady85 Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 Glad the youngsters won, it's a good score. Hopefully we will be able to see them perform in the first time in the future
Thracian Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 Irrespressible Adi Yussef spearheaded an exciting comeback by Leicester City Under 18's this morning as they turned a 2-0 half-time deficit into a 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to remain unbeaten as League leaders and take their strike rate to 29 goals from their eight games so far. Yussef scored the first and fourth goals as City all but overwhelmed their opponents after half-time, transforming a game which had previously been so evenly matched. It was exhilerating stuff and wonderful value for the sizeable crowd who were finally sent home with yet another goal to remember. Jeff Schlupp, City's number 9, broke clear wide on the halfway line and was like a steeplechaser at Aintree as he leapt past one desperate challenge and then another. Without hesitation he drove into the penalty box and pulled the perfect ball across goal leaving Yussef with a "Goodnight and goodbye" tap-in to send the Spurs fans home wondering what had suddenly hit them. Tottenham have always seemed a team that looks strong, fast and organised when I've watched them and a combination of determined attacking of the ball and poor marking of runners led to them taking a 2-0 half-time lead and exposing faults in City's previously much-praised defence. Although there was some feeling that their first by Kudus Oyenuga may have been a headed own goal the second came from a brilliant driving run into the box which no City defender picked up. City's only hope of salvation was a flag from the linesman - presumably for some sort of perceived infringement - but the referee allowed the goal to stand and Spurs looked as if they might well go on to improve their run of four successive victories . The goal might have been quite a blow to City because it came barely a minute after Ambrusics had saved a penalty given for a blatant foul in the box on Jesse Waller-Lassen. The keeper guessed correctly, diving full-length to push a well-hit shot wide of his right-hand post. Sadly it was the penalty-taker, Josde Mpoku who so-quickly got his revenge when the resulting corner came over! City did have chances, Schlupp, City's number nine, having the best when he lobbed the ball over the onrushing Spurs keeper Jamie Butler and wide of an open goal. The keeper then half-saved a rasping effort from the same player before blocking Yussef's follow up and then having to leave the field on a stretcher with blood pouring from a possibly broken nose. Leicester changed their tactics second half, narrowing the play, providing closer support to each other and getting the balll forward much faster into the danger areas. They were quickly rewarded when a long clearance from Ambrusics found Yussef who muscled off his marker and slotted home into the left-corner with three hovering defenders afraid to put a vital foot in as the striker surged into the box. Schlupp worked a couple of good chances but wasted what looked like fairly straightforward shots past the isolated goalkeeper but an equaliser always looked likely and it was Jorrin John who raced onto a through ball and coolly guided his finish inside the far right post. Tottenham were clearly reeling. Their competitive edge had dulled, they seemed tactically unsure whether to stick or twist and while they were hesitating left-winger Nathan Hicks joyfully pounced on a loose cross at the far post and volleyed home and unstoppable shot from close range. The brilliant Sclupp/Yussef move for City's fourth was mere cream on the cake as City added Spurs to the list of big name Academy sides who have foundered against the Leicester boys - names that have included Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa. Individually Yussef was the clear man of the match with his brace of goals and the havoc he created even when sometimes finding himself as a lone striker. Schlupp too was like a will o' the wisp, slithering this way and that through the Spurs defence like some supercharged wraith and only disappointing with carelessly inaccurate finishing. Ben Milnes and company emerged from a difficult first half to completely subdue the visiting midfield, Jorrin John again impacted with a well taken goal, some dangerous crosses and a continued willingness to work back and relieve pressure. At the back, City's much-praised centre-backs were found wanting to begin with but the back line of Moore, Parkes, Bolger and Taft eventually contained Spurs so well that they managed only one serious shot second half.
Joe. Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 It's bloody exciting seeing our youth team destroy its Premier League counterparts on a weekly basis. Here's to hoping that more can break through than the similarly successful class of '07.

Cheers mate good review. You ever thought of contacting the merc or OS and asking to do the write up for the academy games? Maybe a little biased but much more detail than any other report we get.

Edmund Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 Fez's is doing that. I thought Fez did City games here and there not specifically academy games

davieG Posted 10 October 2009 Author Posted 10 October 2009 I thought Fez did City games here and there not specifically academy games He's now doing the Academy as well when he can get to them. As for Thracian I believe he's been there and done that.

DB11 Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 I was there today How come you failed to mention Spurs' missed penalty?
Thracian Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 Cheers mate good review. You ever thought of contacting the merc or OS and asking to do the write up for the academy games? Maybe a little biased but much more detail than any other report we get. I just hope its accurate. It's all strictly amateur and off-the-cuff now and, with plenty to debate with friends on the sideline, I'm quite likely to miss a bit. Nor does it help that City never bother to issue team sheets cos I'm still unfamiliar with a few faces and officials usually stay well clear of the rank and file during match time. As DavieG mentions, Fez was there on behalf of the Mercury and I'm sure he will have checked everything out officially. And I'll look forward to his report as much as anyone else.
Thracian Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 I was there today How come you failed to mention Spurs' missed penalty? How right you are. New paragraph duly inserted. You can see why I retired now!

Corky Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 Well done again to the Academy boys. A phenomenal start to the season, and all bodes well for the future. Great stuff
Fez of Mahrez Posted 10 October 2009 Posted 10 October 2009 Offered to do a report for the Merc seeing as City haven't got a first-team game this weekend but doubt it will be a regular thing. Was a fantastic comeback, so much passion and enthusiasm showing. Jorrin John was absolutely brilliant second half, changed the game completely.
Katy Posted 11 October 2009 Posted 11 October 2009 At the risk of sounding like a massive cliche, it was really a game of two halves. They looked sluggish and off pace to start with, then, in the second half they totally dominated. Massively impressed with the Academy, I've seen them a few times now and the team spirit they have is great to see. It's a shame that some of them won't make it into the first team but I'm willing to say that Jorin John, Tom Parkes, Adi and possibly Jeff will be names to look out for in the future. I'm hoping to go and watch them as much as I can, and an Academy game wouldn't be the same without Cian Boulger's Dad shouting encouragement from the sidelines

He's not the type of guy you'd easily not notice!
