Gené and Tonic Posted 30 October 2009 Posted 30 October 2009 Hey, are there any book-reading and/or politically minded people on this board that could recommend me some good political fiction to read? I've read the Orwell books but would like to get more into the genre. I'm planning to read H.G. Wells' Modern Utopia and Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
BoneDog Posted 30 October 2009 Posted 30 October 2009 Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is that kind of book. Some people say it's better than 1984. Also Philip K Dick is similar I think. I've read 'Man In The High Castle' and think that was political fiction about an alternative result in WW Deuce where the nazis won. Been a while since I read them so I might be wrong but at the time I loved em.
Monk Posted 30 October 2009 Posted 30 October 2009 If I had to place my life savings on who would reply to this thread first I would have said El Empty. Not so much fiction but I have enjoyed Michael Moore's books down the years. Naomi Klein also has a few non fictions which are very interesting (No Logo, in particular)
Zingari Posted 30 October 2009 Posted 30 October 2009 labour and tory party manifestos edit ;oh yeah and the warren commission report
FilboFox Posted 30 October 2009 Posted 30 October 2009 It's not really political fiction... in fact its not that at all... but if you haven't already done so, and this applies to EVERYONE, watch the film Zeitgeist. It's one of the most amazingly revealing films about how our lives are run by the banks, how the government has been lying to us for centuries and how religion is all plagiarised rubbish. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=70...683847743189197 If you have a spare 2 hours then do watch it... it's slow to begin with, the first 5-10 minutes are just someone talking but once it gets going, its amazing what is revealed about some sensitive subjects.

I don't think it shows this (although the makers of the film may have been saying that). To me it just shows how the political elite of the times have changed the message of the prophets like Jesus to turn the masses towards Sun worship and celebrating certain days. For example, the 3 stars and King bits of story were added to Christianity a while after the start. Also the 25th of December was put in (as of old) as Jesus' supposed birthday, when in fact it is a special day for the Pagans and nothing to do with Jesus. Sorry for talking Religion in this thread, just wanted to reply about Zeitgeist. I won't do it again I do like the film though.

Flynny Posted 31 October 2009 Posted 31 October 2009 If you're taken in by Zeitgeist check it's sources - some quotes are literally just made up. Not that it isn't interesting or fairly plausible.
