Pompey threaten to ban Mr Portsmouth FC

POMPEY are threatening to ban their most famous fan, it has been claimed.

John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood - he changed his name by deed poll - could be banned from Fratton Park for persistent standing and ringing his bell constantly during matches.

In a statement from the Football Supporters Federation, Mr Westwood said: “We want to make as much noise as possible in support of our Club. Playing instruments sitting down is not an option and singing is far more natural standing up. After all you stand for hymns in church and for the National Anthem, even in football grounds.”

It is claimed that during the last few games at Fratton Park, Mr Westwood and his followers have remained seated, while normal fans around them continue to stand.

Mr Westwood, who runs a bookshop in Petersfield, claims he was written to by Portsmouth FC warning him that the Safety Advisory Group considered him to blame for hundreds of fans standing at the ground.

He is easily recognised by his blue wigs, numerous Portsmouth tattoos and bright blue clothing which leaves his chest exposed, regardless of the weather.

Portsmouth FC have declined to comment on the matter.

Ok, doesn't explicitly state that he has been threatened, but it's fair to say it isn't exactly the best thing Portsmouth have ever done.

Also strange timing, weird that they NOW, after what must be a good couple of decades, now they actually have something to worry about, they waste their time warning him.

Ridiculous.

It's a bit of a fooking joke! Why not stop fans from singing, cheering or possibly attending the match at all

This is exactly what Pompey need to be doing at the moment, making their most loyal fans unhappy.

Good work!

I'm all for standing and singing at matches obviously and think this a bit draconian but if you were the poor sod next to him as he rang his bell for 90 minutes every Saturday, wouldn't you secretly be a little pleased? Must be like standing next to a louder, more annoying version of Bernie.

At least they're doing a good job of nipping it in the bud early doors, before he starts doing it every week for the next 20 years...oh.

"You can stick your stupid cow bell up your arse - sideways" springs to mind. Oh the memories....

Problem is unlike other countries there are plenty of people over here that are very happy to sit down all game in silence. If fans were threatend to be ejected or banned for standing in other countries the fans would boycott matches by the thousands. There seems to be little unity between fans in england and football is so popular fans just take the places of those who have left. Its a very sad situation many factors have bought us to this state of affairs and unless rules change (yeah right) things will continue in this vain.

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way...

How right Floyd were.

was sat about 3 rows behind him at the England Wales game at Old Trafford a few years ago and the bell is bloody annoying although for some reason he seemed to have a bag of elastic bands and was flicking them at a photographer and encouraging others to do the same.... a very strange individual

Well fook off now then if you hate it so much.

Jesus christ, if they've been standing for years and there haven't been any incedents in relation to safety then why try and do this now. It's embarassing.

Obvious point to make but Portsmouth also have much more important things to worry about right now.
