Bert Posted 13 June 2010 Posted 13 June 2010 Fair enough, because it could be an easier passage through, but if we want to win this, we're going to have to beat the bigger and better teams. When it gets to the last 16, there's going to be no mugs in the tournament. I think we'll get through to the last 16, and if we play to our full potential we can go all the way, and on our day we can beat anyone, it's just finding our day! There's a big difference in saying it and doing it though. Just look how long it took Spain and their "potential" I'm not a big fan of this "believe" bullshit. We need to step up and show other countries what we're made of and why we can be one of the best teams in the world. We've got some great individuals who sometimes carry their clubs (Gerrard, Rooney). so there's no reason why they can't do it for England. It's a shame the press are such cunts, because they feed so much crap through the papers, tv etc, that many people believe that it's true. Just get behind the country and support the lads. Whatever happens, will happen.
BlueSi13 Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 Im not afraid of anyone in this tournament, this is a World Cup, at some point the big boys all have to meet each other, bring it on!!

I agree we can beat anyone, but I also fear that we can lose to anyone too. If we find anyone on their 'good day' then we've shot it (that particular game).

Guest Mee-9 Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 If your worthy of winning the world cup, then you should be able to beat the 'big teams'
Salieri Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 I think one of the reasons it may be beneficial to avoid the 'big' teams early on is that the longer the tournament goes on, the more time the manager has with the players, and the players have with each other. Teams tend to start slowly and get better as the tournament progresses so in that sense, i'd rather we face the likes of Spain, Agrentina, Brazil etc as late on in the tournament as possible. I realise it is the same for all teams and that yes, you have to be able to beat the best to go on to win the tournament, but i would definitely prefer the easiest route possible. And for the record, i do think we have a decent chance of going all the way.
dandannieldanok Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 Yea that's all fine but come on...after our respective performances, you'd surely want to avoid Germany in the last 16 if possible, it's a no brainer.

Maybe, maybe not. Our recent performances, going back several months, have been piss poor, I can't believe that some people don't see that. The USA game was tense, we were jittery and lacking in confidence, despite the early goal. Continuing in anything like that form will get us absolutely nowhere, we really need something to restore our confidence and really get us going. So what could be better than a hard fought win over Germany to convince us that we really are in with a shout. Beat the Germans and the next game will, in all probability, be against Argentina. Brilliant! Bring it on...

Correct, nothing would be better than a hard-fought win over Germany, but as you say performances have been piss-poor whereas Germany looked absolutely mint last night, so actually getting that hard-fought win is pretty unlikely as things stand.

Agreed. But without the lift such a win would bring England are going nowhere. So unlikely as it may be I am beginning to think that this scenario is the only one that gives us a chance of making an impact in the Tournament. Win the group, stumble past Ghana (or whoever) and get turned over by a mediocre French side in the Quarters is the best we can hope for if we continue to play as we did the other night. England can do better, we just need something to make it so...
