Finnegan Posted 27 July 2010 Posted 27 July 2010 Sorry, I'm aware there's probably a thread about phones somewhere but I'm lazy. I'm also aware going back to the shop would be the best answer but I'm not going to get much of a chance for several days so I thought I'd pick your brains. Basically I'm totally clueless about phones, I've been on pay as you go with some brick for six years. Yesterday I got a phone from Carphone Warehouse with a 24 month contract with Vodafone. The guy was brilliantly helpful but I was a bit distracted and wasn't entirely listening to everything he said. I'm pretty sure he said I'd be able to text and use the internet straight away (which seems true) but to make and receive calls I'd have to activate it. I'm also pretty sure he said that Vodafone would email me within twenty four hours (usually half an hour) with more information. Well it's now been over twenty four hours and I've not heard a pip, texting back and forth works fine but if I go to make a call it fails instantly and anyone phoning me just gets voicemail. Am I being impatient or should I follow up? Or is it more likely I've just done something stupid with the phone myself? I know they definitely got my email correct because I've had an email from the Carphone Warehouse inviting me to back up the information on my phone on some service of theirs but nothing from Voda. Anyone?
Edmund Posted 27 July 2010 Posted 27 July 2010 Yesterday I got a phone from Carphone Warehouse with a 24 month contract with Vodafone. I think you've been had. 12 months is bad enough.
Alexikokopops Posted 27 July 2010 Posted 27 July 2010 I think you've been had. 12 months is bad enough. Most contracts are 18 and 24 months now.
Edmund Posted 27 July 2010 Posted 27 July 2010 Most contracts are 18 and 24 months now. Daylight robbery. To be fair I did hear someone mention this. How come they've scrapped the 12 month contracts? Obviously profit aside surely it's not the most attractive deal for enticing new customers. I know they still do 12 month contracts for upgrades though.

Obviously profit aside surely it's not the most attractive deal for enticing new customers. I know they still do 12 month contracts for upgrades though. The thing is, if everyone has a minimum 18 month contract, they're still going to attract new customers because there is no lower alternative. The move towards smart phones means phones themselves are more expensive, and since in a contract you're paying for the phone as well, mobile companies have increased contracts to cover this expense, rather than hike up prices of 12 month contracts. That's one way of looking at it. The other is that they're all robbing bastards.
James. Posted 28 July 2010 Posted 28 July 2010 I renewed mine on a 12 month recently. Maybe I'm special. Finners - dial 191 on your phone and speak to Customer Services (assuming you can actually do that). They can be painfully retarded but when you're lucky you can get someone who is actually quite helpful.
Finnegan Posted 28 July 2010 Author Posted 28 July 2010 Cant even call 191. Says call ended instantly. Everything else works, im posting on it now
Benji Posted 28 July 2010 Posted 28 July 2010 Got a new pay monthly phone with Orange yesterday and they have a similar security bar. You have to go online (which didnt work for me) or call them and just confirm some security details to say you've arrived home safely with it / if bought online it has arrived through transit. Once confirmed I had to turn my phone off for half an hour then once switched back on all the bars were lifted. Maybe something similar with Vodafone? If phone calls are the only limited feature of the contract that'll be the only thing barred as it stops someone who shouldn't have it, inflicting a cost on you. My emails and texts worked the moment i turned it on as they are unlimited. Had to call from the landline though as obviously the calls were barred

I'll have a browse of their website or call with my flatmate's phone when he gets back from Devon!
