MK Dons - Reserve Friendly - 2 new Trialists

The MK Dons website has reported the fact that the Reserve Friendly match against City took place this afternoon. They didn't give any score, any match report or give the (City) team - but they did say it happened - which is more than the City OS has done !

As Stringy reported and Thracian / nickleby said, we lost 2 - 1, with Youth Team player Nathan Hicks scoring for us first. 5 trialists played - the 3 already with us and 2 (un-named) new ones (a wide midfield player and a striker). Obviously the 3 trialists haven't impressed in their 2 reserve matches, because they have now been released. The other two, have a second reserve game on Monday to prove themselves. Berner and Moreno played against MK (they had a strong team, with no first team game this weekend) - and Neilson played at centre back (?!), with young Ciaran Bolger - probably why we lost !

apparently. Well at least that's how I read it in the Merc.

Leicester City had two un-named trailists in their ranks as they faced MK Dons yesterday in a friendly at Stadium MK.

The trialists were a wide midfield player and a striker, and they were watched by first-team manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

City lost 2-1, despite Nathan Hicks opening the scoring, and reserve-team manager Chris Powell said it was a useful exercise.

City are in action again on Monday at Chesterfield.

"We started off very well and very positively and went 1-0 up," said Powell.

"Nathan took his goal very well but they were strong because they have no first-team game this weekend.

"They had six or seven players with first-team experience. So it was a tough test for us.

"They got back into it and scored just before half-time. It was finely balanced but they took the lead and held on.

"We had some chances at the end and a draw would have been fair but in the end it was a good experience for us."

First-team players Bruno Berner and Moreno played an hour while Robbie Neilson was used as a centre-back alongside Cian Bolger.

"Without them on the pitch it was a very young side but I am pleased with how they are developing," added Powell. "They stood up quite well.

"The boss came along and he likes to keep an eye on them and I don't like to lose any game.

"I feel we could have played a bit better, and we have played better at times. But it is all part of the learning curve for these young players."

Three trialists who have been training with City – Cameroon goalkeeper Joslain Mayebi, Greek midfielder Ilias Kyriakidis and Benin striker Razak Omotoyossi – have been released after failing to secure contracts with the club

Seems almost like open house in the reserves now and it's hard to see what purpose the team serves, development wise.

We got most players through to the first team when we had a regular side - mostly the Academy lads moving up - and when we perhaps introduced one or two additional players who could be slotted into a basic system of play, for whatever reason.

I just don't see how having a multi-change team either develops the young players effectively or helps any trialists to do themselves justice.

Furthermore, friendly football is all mickey mouse anyway. Players are surely trying to show they can be winners in competitive situations and if the team is not involved in trying to win anything then it fails to engender the qualities of team spirit and focus that have been so much a part of the Academy success.

Indeed I'd say that one of the great failings at Leicester in recent seasons has been the constant, often inexplicable or unjustified, changes. We're more like a railway station than a football club.

Pearson wasn't the most imaginative or exciting manager. But he did build on the foundations of a regular team and a small squad and that approach served us quite well, as far as it went. Either side of Pearson there has been no stability at all. We've had more changes than a model on a catwalk.

Why so pessimistic?

We have a new manager and a will to go up. It's not a five year strategy where you have to rely on the resources at hand.

Sven have watched a lot of trialists over the years so I think he knows what to look for in a player.

Apart from the Pearson era I can't think of a time in the last 8-10 years when we didn't have a new or close-to-new manager.

i'm not pessimistic about Sven. I've already said that the bloke has class and an attitude of giving something to the fans that I like,

But - and for Sven's sake as much as anyone else's - the sooner we stablise the better.

...... the sooner we stablise the better.

We have a lot of new players now. In January this will change again. Players out and players in and in the summer it's the same again.... We all know that so why moan about it.

The stabilisation you're after will maybe happen next season, not before.....

Hopefully a reserve league will start so the academyplayers can slot in easier.

Spot on - but I hope we don't change to much as somtimes this can undo any good work and cause more problems in the long run
