Uncle Phil Posted 26 March 2011 Posted 26 March 2011 I don't buy a lot of things off the internet, and have seen an item I want on Gumtree. Trouble is the seller doesn't take paypal. It all looks legit, he responses promptly, but he wants me to pay by bank transfer or cheque. Now if I pay by bank transfer, and he doesn't send the item, do I have any kind of security? A big IF, but just want to make sure I'm covered.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 March 2011 Posted 26 March 2011 I used to work for a bank and used to do these kinds of transfer. It was about 5 years ago, but there is no kind of security without going into some kind of prolonged legal pursuit of the money should he fail to deliver. Cheque is safer, since technically it can even be recalled after it "clears", since technically, they never do actually clear. We were under strict orders never to say that a cheque had "cleared" just that it was "available to draw against". A few time I encountered people who had had cheques recalled after the date that technically they should have "cleared". So a bit safer, but not guarenteed, but then what is in life?
Uncle Phil Posted 26 March 2011 Author Posted 26 March 2011 Ok thanks for that. I'll bare that in mind.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 March 2011 Posted 26 March 2011 I don't think I've ever used the word technically so much in one paragraph.
Jackirius Posted 26 March 2011 Posted 26 March 2011 Ask him if he can list it on ebay and you buy it Via that. Not so sure about gum tree but if you don't receive your item and pay for it via ebay and no refund is warranted then they can press criminal charges.
Uncle Phil Posted 26 March 2011 Author Posted 26 March 2011 Cheers guys, I get the impression he's a bit pissed off I didn't want to pay by bank transfer though after his rant about how he should be the cautious one incase I'm scamming him. So **** him I'll just buy from someone else.
The Doctor Posted 26 March 2011 Posted 26 March 2011 hold on, if you're buying an item off him, how are you scamming him?
Uncle Phil Posted 26 March 2011 Author Posted 26 March 2011 Excactly, I'm scamming you by sending you £200 of my money? Of course mate. He wouldn't have a paypal because "scammers ask you to send things abroad then send you fake emails". Plymouth isn't abroad.
m00nie Posted 26 March 2011 Posted 26 March 2011 hold on, if you're buying an item off him, how are you scamming him? accepting paypal is to open to abuse/risk.. could be paying with a hacked account, a stolen card, could even just say the account was used unathourised and paypal will refund the buyer..
FoxyPV Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Bought all my cars from gumtree never had any bother but then again I've to go and see the car in person.
Uncle Phil Posted 27 March 2011 Author Posted 27 March 2011 What are you buying out of interest? Camera lens. Also if he was wary of being scammed, wouldn't ebay be a better bet? bit more security for both parties.
m00nie Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Camera lens. Also if he was wary of being scammed, wouldn't ebay be a better bet? bit more security for both parties. Not really.. Would have to accept papal on ebay.. Then theres the fees..
Jackirius Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Camera lens. Also if he was wary of being scammed, wouldn't ebay be a better bet? bit more security for both parties. Ebay is safer to do it by i would think.
