with the amount of other shit that people admire and respect thats played on the TV every other week, i dont think it's too much of a stretch to see what the forces get up to and respect what they do aswell.

I fookin really hate it when people say 'its their job' what a fukin narrow minded and childish point.

What profession are you in? An office worker, where perhaps a bad day at work is the photocopier breaking down? a bad day in their job probably involves a friend losing a limb or their life.

Its a weak argument saying it'd be different if they were conscripts. No it wouldn't. These young men (sometimes women) VOLUNTARILY join, putting themselves at risk (which they don't care about) but they do care about the kids and wives they would leave behind.

You should be grateful to these blokes that they defend you whilst you go about spouting balls on forums.

If it wasn't for them volunteering you'd be feeling quite sorry for yourself once you got conscripted into the forces yourself!

Fuk me if everyone was like you we'd have no country to defend.

Edit- oh, and were the conscripts in WW2 braver than the men who were already in the regular army who also fought in WW2?

Think about what you're saying

I'm not even trying to compare my job to theirs but it's not like they go out there and don't get well paid for it. You are making it sound as if they go and fight just for the love of it - they don't - they must clearly have some sense of misplaced nationalism/ belief that they are doing the right thing - the govt gives them a big ****ing wedge of money for what they are doing. I didn't choose to join the Army because I don't believe in what they stand for but mainly because if you join the Army you are likely to see active service and I for one don't fancy being shot/ bombed etc in far off distant lands for some spurious lie.

My brother in law served in Afghanistan and Iraq and I think he was ****ing insane because he was leaving at home three kids and a wife. No amount of money makes choosing to put your life on the line worthwhile. Plus he got a MASSIVE ****ing payoff when he left the Army. He was a bog standard infantry man and by the time he left he was on a lot more than Ms Foxy who is a Head of Department in Belfast Met. That's a lot of money for someone with no trade and no education.

Sorry but these soldiers aren't defending me. They are reacting to a situation that was caused by the West in the first place. The West armed and trained the Taliban to fight the Soviets and then left them to do as they wished once the Soviets left Afghanistan. It was only when the Taliban etc began to target the West, then they thought about reconsidering their position.

It's not the soldiers' fault that they are there but don't spout shit about them defending the general public and making them into some sort of freedom fighting heroes.

I wouldn't be conscripted because I'd rather go to jail than fight for some bollocks nationalist cause and You are completely mising the point here, when you think I care about nationalism or my country. The place you are born means **** all really.

On the subject of WW2 - did I say anywhere that they were braver? Different time/ different place.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.

Quick reply as im at work. Your brother must have retired at least a sergeant then-unless he was an officer as theyre well paid anyway.

When I was in, sergeant major retiring after 22 yrs got a 56k tax free payout plus 400ish a month pension for the rest of their life. But the majority don't serve long enough to reach sergeant, let alone to do 22 years. The squaddies being killed are on piss poor wages, 18k at most year for a private. Thats nowhere near what a pc earns.

My mate after his 6 months in iraq came back with 6k in his account- he too is infantry (coldstream guards, a fine body of men) So, a grand a month is not well paid. Not when you have someone at the council working as something like a lesbian outreach worker on 50k a year.

Guy i know just joined the Royal Anglians and is on something like 17000 a year or something. That isn't by far a good enough wage in my opinion.

Your arguments are convincing enough without you having to make stuff up, senor.

We'd all be lesbian outreach workers on 50k a year if such posts actually existed

Hell I'd do it for nothing.

And by lesbian I mean the Lindsy Lohan type and not the flat chested, tattooed, short haired female body builders that go around in dungarees.

So this lesbian outreach officer post, are there any positions available? I take it there's a rather long waiting list.

The correct technical terminology I believe is a 'lipstick lesbian'.

I'm not sure a Diversity Officer (an actual job, salary typically between 24 and 27k) would approve
