Guest Col city fan Posted 16 June 2011 Posted 16 June 2011 What is a very good squad player? Someone who isn't good enough for the 1st team but looks the part on the bench? Surely, with limited finances in the championship, you build a squad of players who you feel might be able to stake a claim to a first 11 spot. Spending top wages on someone who is not going to play much is surely a bit flawed? I agree... We don't need any more 'squad' players... The likes of neilsen, berner, nguessan et al most peeps on here have agreed should leave the club. We need good quality lads who will be knocking on the door of the first team week in week out.. This provides the level of competition needed to get that extra mile out of the players in the first eleven at any particular time. We need a healthy squad yes, but of a better calibre of player than smith IMO

sphericalfox Posted 16 June 2011 Posted 16 June 2011 someone who can play in more than one position makes a good squad player ie 5 places on bench 1 player can fill 2 positions? Sven in my view will be seeking players who can do precisely this. OUr current squad and previous one, had a rigid inflexibility that a.) forced us to play a formation that Sven isn't keen on b.) any team with a bit of nouse worked us out and thus we lost points. Essentially people ended up complaining that we didn't have a plan b. We didn't cos we couldn't. Bringing a player like Alan Smith into a squad rotational basis is a a VERY good thing. People are expecting marquee signings for every one we are linked with. We do not have that kind of money and it would be fruitless to start throwing that kind of money about. Smith is free. Whatever people's thoughts are on him as a person or whether or not he played for Leeds, he's still a player who could do the business for us. (I don't like his personality but I won't I would support him if he put on our shirt)
lestajigs Posted 16 June 2011 Posted 16 June 2011 All this talk, but have we actually been linked with him??
sphericalfox Posted 16 June 2011 Posted 16 June 2011 All this talk, but have we actually been linked with him?? All this talk on a football forum, about a player who is available and free. I guess you're right.... Everyone log off. Time to turn off your computers and do something useful until August.

(I don't like his personality but I won't I would support him if he put on our shirt) I agree with your view on the importance of such a 'utility player' so to speak... I don't agree that this player should be smith.. For the reasons cited above: A. He would probably demand a high salary B. He's highly injury prone C. He can be a gobshite He could therefore easily become an expensive liability. What about Reo Coker? Also no transfer fee, younger and can play in midfield or at right back?

Guest Col city fan Posted 16 June 2011 Posted 16 June 2011 Don't get me started Col City. Sorry spherical couldn't resist... And you must admit you've given me your fair share... You didn't reply to my last reply above... You don't fancy Reo Coker as the type of player we could do with?

He ain't at the moment... He's out of contract, lives in the midlands and his wages are probably similar to smiggies. Anyway we'll see spose

Anyway we'll see spose Really? He's younger than him by 4 years, and only in the last 2 years was captaining Aston Villa. He has fallen out of favour with manager's and clearly wanted to move on and waited for this. He will be by far higher wages than Smith. Smith won't be on the money he was on at Leeds years ago, and certainly will have taken a drop in sums over the years, whilst Nigel will have more or less retained his, by being a steady and capable player in a once strong Villa side. Sometimes I wonder where you get your ideas from.
