Swampdog Posted 30 June 2011 Posted 30 June 2011 With the expected change of playing staff this summer does anyone worry that it might affect the performances of the team? I realise we still will have our midfield but the rest of the team looks set for an overhaul. I only ask because although the players that we get may be very good on paper it inevitably takes time for players to gell. Just look at man city, they started spending big 2-3 years ago and last year was evidently their best however their performances were hit and miss at times and could be attributed to the costant changes. So I have to admit that I am a little concerned but I'm hoping all the new players will fit right in and we kick-start the season in style!! How's everyone else feel about this, will we have a great team or a squad of great individuals?
One Half Wonder Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 I guess we have no choice, we're not good enough with the team we currently have so if it takes time to 'gel' then it takes time, not a lot we can do about it except try and get them to gel sooner rather than later which is why Sven is trying to get players in before training starts. The long term contracts players are signing helps too, if they live in the area, they're part of the community, they're one of us which i'm a big fan of and should be encouraged - i know Pearson did this a lot.

Only difference is the players we are looking at bringing are of better quality. Just need to try to get partnerships sorted early and let them develop early. After 5-6 games playing together it shouldn't be an issue.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 Yeh I thought this too. Theres nothing to say that we will see any player from last season in the starting 11 at cov. At least he's getting a few in early on, but the pre season isn't long enough for everyone to gel properly
KFS Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 Players have some time to gel with their team mates in pre-season. When they play all these memorable European games, it gives them something to remember as a unit, and they all gain common ground. I just hope we get a decent CB pairing in before the pre-season is fully under way, or they won't gel. Hoping there's no injuries too! We can't afford to chop and change the squad this season, there needs to be a core.
B52 Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 .... I only ask because although the players that we get may be very good on paper it inevitably takes time for players to gell. I looked at statto when you talked about gel. Mancini seems to work after a strict schedule. He isn't worried about losses. He just goes on and on and rotates. Next year he'll probably grind Manure down to second place. You can say he is learning the english style. So when we're talking about gelling players, do you have Mancinis strategy in front of you? Then we have Svens first year in PL. Had a relegation team and bought players for 50 mill. With your thinking Sven would be at the bottom from the start and climb up the table til the end of the season. Funny though, Sven managed to get the players to gel instantly. When November ended, 14 matches, Man City was fourth with an ppg at 2.07.

I would have been concerned if I thought Sven had signed players who wouldn't gel (eg the yak who I still feel is motivated predominantly by money) But I like his signings... Would love to see cms here and I highly rate mills... So I'm not concerned at the mo and I think Sven is doing well in the transfer Market
sphericalfox Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 What I like about some of the players that have joined us is that they already know players in our team. Now I know that doesn't mean that on a football basis they'll instantly know each other inside out, but that's what the preseason training and matches will provide some time to get that bit of understanding. But the personalities of the team seem to be ideal, both with who have joined us and who have been mooted so far. Also a number of the players Sven knows personally. He is signing players not only on their footballing strengths but perhaps on personality too. Players that are adaptable and players he feel he can get the best out of. I feel the squad will have the understanding that rotation will be the name of the game. Tiredness can be a downfall, and cost vital points. A fresh and eager team will be a prospect that oppositions who can't afford a team with strength in depth won't want to play against. We must also remember that Masilela and Bamba will be off at some stage to play African Cup games, so depth at the back will definitely be key. I hope that all the defenders we have been linked with sign on, as we'll need them.

I also guess it's a sign of our progression as a club when we have to take into account players leaving for the African nations cup.
21st Century Fox Posted 1 July 2011 Posted 1 July 2011 Agree with Spherical, although it seems slightly trivial, the fact that the majority of our signings are already friends and played together in some capacity with some established players could be nothing but it could be a massive advantage. Gally seems to be the linchpin of the squad at the moment.
