jock2612 Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 Saw the Chavs at Kettering today. It was their first team, thought Clingan and Jutkeiwicz looked sharp, Mcsheffrey hopeless, generally pushed very hard by a good Kettering Town team for whom Aman Verma played very well. HOPEFULLY not much to fear.
Guest Bilo Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 Coventry won 1-0, McSheffrey the scorer. Pretty poor result considering the strength of the side they put out.

True story, though I would hazard a guess that Coventry were taking the game rather seriously with the squad they put out. Surely having a challenging pre-season against better teams would do more for match sharpness though? Our team will have begun the gelling process against Bursaspor, Valencia and Real Madrid while they'll be playing Kettering, Chesterfield and Norwich. That said though, Coventry aren't a team I'm especially worried about. I can see them in a relegation battle again.
purpleronnie Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 I'm sure it would of mattered if we had won today.

No if we finish within ten pts of Cov I think we can safely say we wont be promoted. I prefer our route of pre-season, we have tried it before going to Hinckley etc and although its a great day out for us lot it can't do much good to be preparing V team 5 divisions below you. When a boxer spars for a world title fight he doesnt use his normal gym partners, he brings in other world class fighters who are also preparing on his level to get some serious work in and make sure his standard of defence and offence are going to be up to the level he will need. It shouldnt be too different in football for the start of the season, those 2/3 games at the start might seem insignificant over 46 games but if you look at the history of teams who go up 95% of the time they always start very well.

You could argue that we're not properly preparing because we're not playing English teams. Or that we're not practising against the kind of teams we're likely to face, teams that will play for a draw.
