Ahead of Fernandes, King and, presuming he's as good as he was pre-injury crisis, Johnson?

At the minute, he's our best midfielder. We don't know what King will do in the future, but Wellens gives us more at the minute. As for Fernandes and Johnson...they've had 3 games between the two of them, so I'm hardly going to put them above a player entering his third season with us. He was voted player of the year (by the fans) at the end of last season so obviously some others agree with me.

I've never seen his set-pieces to be any better than any other player at the club, bar waghorn. Certainly Gallagher's are far better and, although this is based on YouTube videos, Abe's seem better as well.

Gallagher's set-peices are very inconsistent in my books. Just to clarify - I'm not talking about direct free-kicks on goal. Quite frankly there are very few players in our division that have any real success with that. Gallagher's corner-taking I think is very poor...far too many balls that don't even make it into the box or are lofted to the back. Abe never takes any of our set-pieces anyway...as for youtube, well - that even made kaebi look good. I find it hard to believe that he's banging them in on the training ground and not being allowed to have a go during games.

As for the tackling and defence-splitting passes - if he can do so, why does he so frequently fail to do so?

I'm not claiming he's Iniesta or anything. Again, this kind of play is rare in our division - i just think he has more of an eye for a pass than King or Abe.

That is the wrong way round:

There were few games last season were we played well and he under-performed

He is more often than not a hindrance to our midfield - look at Watford home last season for a good example: First half, with Wellens, we were abysmal but when he came off for the second half we were greatly improved, retained possession much better and looked more promising going forward as well as more solid defensively.

Well Watford is one game - he played pretty much every league game for us last season and was bound to have off days. I don't accept that he's a hinderance most of the time he plays.

he does have the biggest influence on how we play, I'll give you that, but it's in a bad way. If he under-performs we get over-ran trying to carry him in the team, Abe on the other hand plays similar to how Dickov did and, even when under-performing, still provides help by buzzing around and being a general pest.

Well if being a 'general pest' is praise, then whatever. I just don't see why he's in the team at the minute, particularly with playing Fernandes too. Yuki Abe doesn't lose us games but he doesn't win us games either.

I'd disagree there, Fernandes may only played 2 league games but in both of those he's looked far better than I can remember Wellens ever doing.

As for the fans player of the season, the average Leicester fan is an idiot. Witness the doom in threads on here after a single defeat, the immediate vilification of Ricardo despite doing nothing wrong, the fact that Weale seems generally immune to criticism despite being generally shit with anything coming from more than 18 yards out, Waghorn being spaffed over despite being less accurate with his shooting than an American soldier etc.

Gallagher may put in the odd poor corner but, aside from the free-kick for Peltier's goal at cov, has Wellens ever delivered a ball that's posed any sort of a threat to a defence from a set piece?

I'm not claiming he's Iniesta or anything. Again, this kind of play is rare in our division - i just think he has more of an eye for a pass than King or Abe.

It's rare because so few players can pull it off and they accept this, Wellens however does not and, despite his passing being so often off the mark, he insists on trying to play these "hollywood" balls which don't work - compare that with king: quick, short passes which, while unremarkable, retain possession and get us moving.

Well if being a 'general pest' is praise, then whatever. I just don't see why he's in the team at the minute, particularly with playing Fernandes too. Yuki Abe doesn't lose us games but he doesn't win us games either.

Yuki contributes no less to a win than Wellens and is more useful in midfield to boot.

Wellens' shooting is atrocious, so frequently dragged wide. For a player of his supposed technical ability he doesn't contribute nearly enough assists, nor does he provide much steel in the midfield or any tackling ability.

Abe's shooting and assists leave a lot to be desired as well but, unlike Wellens, he puts himself about, winning possession back and, in the main, inhibiting the build-up by the opposition.

He's also a very good man-marker and can keep flair players out the game - witness Commons & Mcgugan against Derby & Florist last November.

Finally he's more versatile than Wellens so his presence helps us be more adaptive to counter opposition threats.

Large Al is right on the money.

Wellens seens to impress some folks with his bluster and showmanship when in reality he achieves very little.

In fact I would go as far as to say his slow and over elaborate play is a major factor as to why, when we come up against decent teams, we are so awful.

Get rid, and do it know.....

Wellens is a poor man's Gareth Williams. He was anonymous in the Real Madrid game and poor again yesterday. It's significant that Sousa, who was a quality midfielder in his day, was less than impressed with him.

lol

You are having a laugh if you are comparing Wellens to Williams. I love both players but Wellens has more about him, such as he gets stuck in and tackles where as Williams didn't. They both spot wonderful passes though. And you are saying how he was anonymous against Madrid. Real Madrid? Previous European Champions. Of course, players are going to seem anonymous, thats why they play for Leicester and not Manchester United.

If you could enlighten me about Sousa not being impressed that would be helpful. Sousa picked Oakley over Wellens against Palace on the opening day, so, because Sousa was a fantastic football that means Oakley is a better player than Wellens?

Thing is, people have to look further into the game. You most probably want King starting everyweek, he's scores goals, thats it. He hasn't got the creative ability of Wellens, he doesn't tackle like Wellens, he doesn't drive with the ball like a midfielder. I prefer to look beyond goals and look at the player's ability. There is a reason why other fans have said 'everything good goes through Wellens' etc
