Millwall Look To Land New Man In 24 Hours

Recommended Posts

Millwall have revealed that their search for a new manager will end on Monday, with former striker Steve Claridge favourite to take over.

Chairman Jeff Burnige confirmed that the Millwall board will meet to confirm a successor to Dennis Wise.

And Burnige expects an official announcement to be made on Tuesday.

George Burley turned down the job after talks with Burnige, leaving Claridge, who had two spells with the club, in pole position for a three-year deal.

Burnige said on the club website: "I am well aware that this has been a lengthy process but the discussions with a number of interested parties have taken place, for the most part in complete confidentiality.

"And, having conducted the last round of three interviews over the weekend, the board of directors are now scheduled to meet on Monday to make the final decision."

It has been reported that Claridge flew back from conducting media work at the Confederations Cup in Germany to open discussions with the Millwall board.

Former Cardiff manager Lennie Lawrence had also been linked with the job, along with Birmingham assistant manager Eric Black.

Wise left The New Den in early May, admitting he was at odds with Burnige over the future direction of the club

Millwall have appointed former striker Steve Claridge as the club's new manager.

The 39-year-old takes charge of the Championship club following the departure of player-manager Dennis Wise and his assistant Ray Wilkins at the end of the season.

Lions chairman Jeff Burnige was keen for the South East London club to have a fresh start, with Millwall considering various available candidates for the post.

Former Ipswich Town and Derby County boss George Burley turned down the opportunity to become Wise's successor while former Cardiff City manager Lennie Lawrence was also mentioned with the role.

In the end, The Lions have turned to a familiar face in Claridge, whose last managerial post was with non-league Weymouth with his last league manager's role being a brief stint at Portsmouth in season 2000/01.

Last season, Claridge finished the campaign with brief playing spells at three clubs in Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford and Wycombe Wanderers.

He takes over a youthful Millwall squad ahead of the new Championship campaign, as The Lions aim to win promotion after finishing tenth in the table last season.

Strange one, Super Steve couldn't hack it at Weymouth.. it would be great to see him make a success of this though.

But I can see a struggle for Millwall this season, relegation likely.

This seems a bizarre decision by the Millwall board - despite Claridge having near cult status at LCFC, the man's a clutse and couldn't manage his way out of a paper bag. Nice one Millwall, he's hoping you really suffer next season.

Don't think the place has ever been quite the same since he and other characters like Walshie and Marshall waved their goodbyes.
