Guest MattP Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 I agree with all of that now but at the point Sven was in our pool of players was stronger than Germanys, Spains and Argentinas. His reign over us involved 3 tournaments where the Germany side he beat 5-1 went onto to a world cup final, Senegal and Turkey made the semis, Greece won a european championship and South Korea made a final 4. His reign looks far better than what it was, give him one major thing, his timing of walking in and out of jobs is the best I've ever seen.
BlueSi13 Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 A wonderful night, on a ground in which Germany had a monumental record. However as somebody already mentioned, that was the highlight for that particular team as like so many that had come before it, the talent we had ended up being completely wasted. It was made even worse last year when the Germans got their revenge.
ScouseFox Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 FIVE ONE, EVEN HESKEY SCORED I remember it being dubbed "Germany 1-5 LFC" over here because all the goalscorers played for Liverpool. ******.
zubi Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 10 Years on... who cares didn't they rape us at the world cup. They'll have the last laugh
ScouseFox Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 Yeah but we fukced them up good and proper. At their place. We were amazing.
zubi Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 I suppose so But it's like Croatia bumming the fact they beat us at Wembley... even though we can brush them aside now. We bummed Germany then... But their team is miles better than ours now
Bellend Sebastian Posted 1 September 2011 Posted 1 September 2011 I managed to miss most of this game (all the goals anyway) because I caught a train back from London to try and escape from my mates who I'd been to Lords with to watch Leicestershire play in the Natwest Trophy final. They'd been drunk to the point of collapse since about 11am and by the evening I was desperate to get away from them, even though we'd started watching the game in the bar at St Pancras. Needless to say, they followed me on to the train and then spent the whole journey moaning as we heard about each goal going in. Definitely one of the longest days of my life

We bummed Germany then... But their team is miles better than ours now I'm actually quite excited by this new wave of English talent that seems to be getting a fair chance in the Premier League, and at big clubs, too. Our options look a lot more extensive now than they did when we were relying on the old guard (Terry, Gerrard, Lampard etc). For the first time in far, far too long we have a number one who inspires confidence (despite the Switzerland blunders), and a wealth of young talent in defence, midfield and attack. Hart Richards----Jones----Cahill----Cole/BainesFrimpongWilshere----CleverleyDowning------Rooney-------Young Is a team that, come Brazil 2014, should be able to do England proud. With Smalling, McEachran, Barkley, Wellbeck, Chamberlain, Dann, Rodwell, Flanagan, Carroll, Kelly, Walker, Robinson, Henderson and tonnes more seemingly getting real chances in decent sides, English football is starting to look dangerously healthy. Be great if Capello wasn't forced into making chances due to injuries/pull-outs and actually started to pick players on merit, though.

Oh don't get me wrong, that team you just selected is bloody brilliant. The likes of cleverly, jones, smalling, wilshere etc hopefully can gel together nicely and really take the world cup by storm. Also the other players you named have a good future ahead of them, let's just hope Capello lets them have game time so they can really gel with the senior players. Got to give a lot of credit to Alex Ferguson for signing up the younger CBs and letting them play in the first team with Vidic and Ferdinand. But If you look at Germanys team, Muller, Kroos, Goetz, Ozil, Badstuber are very hot young prospects. We all know how deadly Ozil and Gotze are. And these guys are getting a run in the team now to gel together for the upcoming tournaments. To be honest I'd fancy the German squad over ours in 2014... but anything can happen

Guest MattP Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 You can forget Frimpong. Frimpong: I have always said that, no matter what, I will always play for Ghana because at the end of the day, from what I believe, I am a Ghanaian
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 You can forget Frimpong. Erm, no. How old is that quote? I'll answer that. OLD. Wenger, amongst others, have all been working towards getting him involved in representing England. Capello has even singled him out for praise recently.
Guest MattP Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Erm, no. How old is that quote? I'll answer that. OLD. Wenger, amongst others, have all been working towards getting him involved in representing England. Capello has even singled him out for praise recently. 6 months ago. Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong says he is ready to play for Ghana despite strong interest from England. The 19-year-old who has already featured for England at the under 16 and 19 levels is just two months from recovering from a 9 month injury. He was praised by manager, Arsene Wenger for his performance during the 2010 Emirates Cup after which he picked the injury. Frimpong, who has been likened to Arsenals Alex Song, says he will only play for Ghana if he is invited for the Black Stars. In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports from his base in London, Emmanuel Frimpong said he will not hesitate to play for Ghana if he gets a Black Stars call up when he is fully fit. I have always said that I will play for Ghana because I am a Ghanaian Player. My whole family is from Ghana but at the same time, I have been in England since I was young and I see England as my home. But at the moment, if Ghana calls me up I will gladly go and play. But there are people who also dont want me be called to play for Ghana which is very disappointing. I guess I just have to wait for a call up but at the moment I am still playing for England so its a bit of a difficult situation he said. I have always told my family that if Ghana calls me, I will personally ride my own bicycle from England to Ghana the Midfielder said on a lighter note. as he should as well, being born in Ghana.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 6 months ago. as he should as well, being born in Ghana. Exactly, six months!! He'll play for England.
Guest MattP Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Exactly, six months!! He'll play for England. Ok then how about this from 3 days ago? Arsenal's Emmanuel Frimpong is hoping his call-up by England for Under-21 duty will spur Ghana's football authorities into action to hand him a senior cap. The 19 year-old midfielder is due to appear for England's U-21 this week but has made it clear he would prefer an international career with Ghana. "I will turn down an invitation for the England senior team when the Ghana Football Association contacts me," he said. "I hope playing for the England U-21 will wake them up." The Ghana Football Association has said little regarding Frimpong future but his emergence for Arsenal this season is likely to trigger interest from here. He sparred with one of his potential competitors for a slot in Ghana's midfield Agyemang Badu during Arsenal's two leg champions league tie against Udinese and while there are those in England who feel he will be worth having as a future English international, his unwillingness to commit to them I drawing criticism. Multiple award winning journalist Martin Samuel in a column for the Daily Mail newspaper argues there is no point in handing Frimpong England U-21 call-ups if he is not keen on an international career with them. "So an England cap is a stepping stone, a negotiating tool, an act of brinkmanship to get the offer he really wants. What are we doing?," Samuel asked. Frimpong is Ghanaian and, more importantly, feels Ghanaian. Maybe the Football Association have been told otherwise. Maybe they believe in Pearce's powers of persuasion. "Certainly Frimpong is a young player worth having, but not on any terms. Even if he did play for England's Under-21 team, he could still declare for Ghana at senior level. There is no point hurriedly tying up a young man who could, several years down the line, decide he has made a horrible mistake. "Now is the time for a very straightforward question: England or Ghana. And if the FA do not receive the right reply, they should not proceed. England are no feeder club. If Frimpong's heart is with Ghana, better he follows it now," he added.
