Rob Tanner Posted 13 September 2011 Posted 13 September 2011 Hi. I will be conducting a live web chat at noon today for half an hour and would love to hear from City fans. You can fire any questions at me about City or the Mercury's coverage of City, or just make a point if you wish. It will be monitored though so keep it clean please! Visit http://ow.ly/6sKDz and register just before noon to take part. This is the first of what I hope will be a regular feature on the Mercury's website and if it is succesful, you never know, we might even be able to get someone from City to come on and take your questions. Cheers
Bert Posted 13 September 2011 Posted 13 September 2011 Rob, the new mercury website is pants! Sometimes the main headline is two days old news!
sphericalfox Posted 13 September 2011 Posted 13 September 2011 Also can you in future have a webchat at a friendly evening time. Some of us have to work. Me thanks you!
Happy Fox Posted 13 September 2011 Posted 13 September 2011 Rob Tanner: Hello Leicester City fans. Welcome to the first of our Mercury Live Web Chats. Ask your questions on City and I will do my best to answer them over the next half hour, but keep it clean please. 11:58 Comment From Joel Hi Rob! What do you think Leicester have to do to click and start winning games comfortably? We've not done bad but we've not really felt comfortable whilst doing it... 11:59 Rob Tanner: I think it simply takes time, but how much time have they got? Theyhave put pressure on themselves during the summer 11:59 Comment From Guest Is Sven's job safe? Is all the speculaion just that? 12:00 Rob Tanner: Well, there is no question that he is expected to deliver and City need to start clicking soon, but the speculation is simply that at this point - pure speculation. 12:00 Comment From Danny Hello Rob. Would you start with Andy King in the City team? 12:01 Rob Tanner: I would play him at the top of a midfield diamond against Brighton, with Beckford and Vassell in attack. 12:02 Comment From mark willoughby 4-4-2 its the only way were not man city if you get the chance we need to convince sven this is the formation and stop playing players out of posision 12:03 Rob Tanner: This is a strange one because Sven was always considered a 4-4-2 man with England and was criticised for not changing. But at City he believes 4-3-3 suits his players better. I reckon he will start 4-4-2 with a diamond against Brighton. 12:03 Comment From Danny Who do you think has been the best of Sven's signings so far? 12:03 Rob Tanner: Kasper Schmeichel has started well, except for the Forest incident. I was impressed with Beckford on Saturday too. 12:03 Comment From John Bull Do you think Martin O'Neill could really return to City? 12:04 Rob Tanner: There is no secret City made an enquiry after Sousa, but he said no. You never say never in football but I understand from other journos it would take a really tempting offer at a top Prem club for Martin to come back. 12:04 Comment From Chris Hi Rob. Would you agree that Svens reluctance to play with any kind of width is causing us big problems? 12:06 Rob Tanner: Well, the 4-3-3 system should give them some width, but Gally likes to drift inside and Vassell is more of a central striker in my opinion, so both don't naturally stay wide. Last season, the full-backs provided the width but Konchesky and Pantsil haven't got forward much yet. 12:06 Comment From Joel Sure does take time. I think being labelled as favourites did not help whatsoever as everyone will up their game against us now; we are a scalp to take. I like your formation choice, Beckford will do well for us. 12:06 Rob Tanner: No, it hasn't helped but Sven and City have not attempted to play that down. In fact they have put more pressure on themselves. 12:06 Comment From Bendover Bukkar are you a leicester city fan? 12:07 Rob Tanner: No, but you do develop an affinity for the clubs you follow in journalism, especially when you get to know some of the people in and around the club. 12:07 Comment From mark willoughby vassell is a wide man play schlupp and beckford up front with 2 wingers like vassell and dyer..it was annoying agaisnt saints when he put schlupp on the wing in the 2nd half 12:08 Rob Tanner: I agree that Schlupp is a prospect, and that he is more of a central striker. 12:08 Comment From Peet Despite Sven's comments will there be any loans coming in, or further players going out? 12:09 Rob Tanner: I would expect some players to come and go, especially if City continue to struggle to click. Sven hasn't got time to mess about. Players will definitely go out on loan. 12:09 Comment From John Winterton Do you think that Sven has bought the right mix of players to get promotion, or do you feel the weight of expectation is unrealistic 12:10 Rob Tanner: The expectation is too much and I don't think we can really judge all his signings yet. Far too early. Take John Pantsil for example. I don't know how much pre-season he had, but he looks short of sharpness, so I will reserve judgement. 12:10 Comment From Guest How important are formations when it's been down to poor quality of football basics like passing, defending from the front and being organised in defence. Some players like Pantsil and Mills are not justifying their starting positions and I don't believe it's just to do with gelling. 12:11 Rob Tanner: This was my point at Barnsley. You can talk about 4-4-2s and 4-3-3s, but if you don't close down, stop crosses getting into your box and track midfeild runners, you are in trouble, regardless of formation. 12:11 Comment From Marc who do you support? 12:12 Rob Tanner: Best not say because I will get hammered by City fans. I did watch Tamworth FC a lot when I was younger and I follow Borussia Monchengladbach from my time as a kid in Germany. 12:12 Comment From Bendover Bukkar I hate people like "Chris" trying to think he knows the problem behind the average start! you are not a manager! Sven see theses players day and day out you don't! Rob do you agree that many fans are over reacting over the start! we have started way better than last season! we were 24th after 9 games! we are 10th after 6! 12:14 Rob Tanner: The level of expectation has lead to the reaction to City's start. That has come from the media, pundits and even from Sven, so I don't blame the fans much. I think, realistically, it is going to take a little time for thsi side to click, but I do believe that when they do click they will be strong in the Championship. 12:14 Comment From Dave M Rob - City were billed as one of the favourites for promotion this season, quite rightly considering the vast sums we've paid. In my opinion the players will gel and we will be in the mix but at this early stage has any other side surprised/impressed you? 12:14 Rob Tanner: I was actually impressed with Barnsley on Saturday, but obviously Brighton and Southampton have started well, and I am looking forward to seeing Poyet's team on Saturday. 12:15 Comment From Liamlcfc What did you think to Beckfords first game ? 12:15 Rob Tanner: Good. He worked the channels, chased lost causes and looked good on the ball. Great skill to tee up Kingy for the equaliser. 12:16 Comment From Sev What steps are taken marketing in Asia in connection with new city owners, who can be next target to get it right? No Beckham, no Kean, then ? 12:17 Rob Tanner: The fact all the home games are now shown live on Thai TV has raised the profile of the club massively, and I know they would like to sign a big game to help develop the profile, but I think the owners know they just can't sign a player for marketing. He has to contribute 12:17 Comment From johnfallen Rob, coaching staff and the ability to motivate do we have enough of both? 12:17 Rob Tanner: City are short of coaching staff, as Alan Young has said in his column in today's Mercury. They haven't replaced Didi. 12:18 Comment From mark willoughby i read today money will be avaialble for sven to buy in jan.....our owners expect promotion do you think if its not going the right way sven will be sacked 12:18 Rob Tanner: I think that is a very real possibility. 12:18 Comment From Chris We don't possess a right-sided wide midfilder & only Dyer on the left. We are too narrow & are relying on konchesky & pantsill for width which is not feasible. 12:19 Rob Tanner: I agree. It would have been nice to see a genuine wide man come in during the summer, and they were looking. They had the option to take Routledge but said no, and they did consider Kebe. 12:19 Comment From rugby fox why in your opinion is Mills under-performing so badly, pressure, injury or was Sven sold a pup? 12:20 Rob Tanner: We have to remember Matt is still young and this is the biggest move of his career, so he needs time to adjust. He hasn't started too well, granted, but we saw at the KP Stadium last season what he can do. I am confident he will improve. Perhaps give the captaincy to Wellens for now and let him concentrate on his game and settling in. 12:21 Comment From James What does Sven need to do to get Mills performing at his best? 12:21 Rob Tanner: See above 12:21 Comment From mark willoughby not a forest fan are you rob......bad news if you are... :-) 12:21 Rob Tanner: Absolutely not! 12:21 Comment From Guest Do you think mat mills could turn out to be another Ade Akinbiyi 12:21 Rob Tanner: See earlier comment on Mills. 12:21 Comment From City Fanatic Hi Rob. Do you think City miss former coach Chris Powell's defensive know-how? 12:22 Rob Tanner: I reckon you have something there because Chris worked tirelessly with the back four. NP knew a thing or two about setting up defences as well. 12:22 Comment From mark willoughby your a forest fan aint ya rob ! 12:23 Rob Tanner: See earlier denial! The club I followed as a kid are a little further away than Nottingham from Leicester. 12:23 Comment From John Winterton Do you think that the clubs relentless pursuit and ultimate failure to sign Nicky Maynard may have been detrimental to the overall quality of players we have signed?
Happy Fox Posted 13 September 2011 Posted 13 September 2011 12:29 Comment From Jimcoalville Rob, realistically how long would you think Sven has got? 12:29 Rob Tanner: I would say the next five games, Brighton at home, Cardif away x2, Middlesbrough away and then Derby at home. He needs to do well in that run of games. 12:29 Comment From jimmy how close was Maynard to actually signing for us? 12:30 Rob Tanner: I understand it was the player's decision ultimately. He has one year left on his contract and wants to run it down at Bristol 12:30 Comment From johnfallen do we know what the new financial fair play regs will have on the club considering the huge investement we have made? 12:31 Rob Tanner: I asked Andrew Neville about this a couple of weeks ago and he said it was still very much up i the air. It is going to happen, but discussions have yet to take place about what regulations will be adopted. Early days, but City are working towards generating more income.
Yojoe36 Posted 14 September 2011 Posted 14 September 2011 12:11 Comment From Marc who do you support? 12:12 Rob Tanner: Best not say because I will get hammered by City fans. Ultra Posted 14 September 2011 Posted 14 September 2011 I bet a tenner it's Cov Rob Tanner: See earlier denial! The club I followed as a kid are a little further away than Nottingham from Leicester Chelsea or Man United then..
1964FOX Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 If they are interested in improving the Leicester Mercury coverage then they should encourage a young reporter who was interviewing fans outside oakwell after the match, he seemed to be a genuine supporter and his first report encouraged me http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/Blue-Army-column-Leicester-City-fans-want-special/story-13313649-detail/story.html
Mack Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 It pretty obvious he is Coventry from what he has said. My commiserations.
