Rincewind Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 This there is a sleep out at the CCC Grace Road in aid of Action Homeless. They are looking for people to sleep 'rough' sleeping bags etc or helping out with the soup kitchen etc. I had my name down a few weeks ago to help out so I suppose I had better turn up. It starts around 8pm and goes on till SAt morning. Anyone is welcome to turn up and cheer the ones doing it on. Even if its from the bar of The Cricketers. May nip in there for a pint first. There are facilities for the volunteers. May need a kip in the afternoon if I'm going to be up all night.
purpleronnie Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 Isn't sleeping rough when you have a home taking the piss?
Rincewind Posted 20 March 2012 Author Posted 20 March 2012 That is one of the misconceptions that people need to be made aware of. Let's get drug addicts and alcoholics out the way too while we are at it.
Webbo Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 That is one of the misconceptions that people need to be made aware of. Let's get drug addicts and alcoholics out the way too while we are at it. That doesn't make any sense at all.

Rincewind Posted 20 March 2012 Author Posted 20 March 2012 What. That people have misconceptions on why people are homeless and sleeping rough? The way they do not know all the facts about all the those on benefits?
speedwayson Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 people sleep rough because they choose to in this country no one should be sleeping rough
Webbo Posted 20 March 2012 Posted 20 March 2012 And what will sleeping rough for a night teach us? That sleeping rough isn't pleasant? I think we can all guess that. Will it stop a total stranger from becoming an alcoholic or mentally ill? It's a pointless gesture that will achieve nothing except making those involved feel superior.
Zingari Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 I might be interested in this sleeping out all night caper Will there be lots of semi naked ladies dancing around campfires in the moonlight, pagan rituals , hog-roasts, stuff like that ?
Rincewind Posted 21 March 2012 Author Posted 21 March 2012 I think some people have missed the whole point of it. There are still many who believe people sleep rough and are homeless through choice and as long as it is not happening to themselves then why should they care. The Sleep Out may seem pointless but it will raise awareness of the problem. Some of those involved with the organizing have actually been homeless and have slept rough in the past. They have been helped to get back on their feet and are now giving something back. Next time you see some one sleeping rough ask them if they know where to go for help. Do you know? There are probably people better informed about this event and what use it will be. They have put in more work and time on on it.
Rincewind Posted 21 March 2012 Author Posted 21 March 2012 Think it should be Not the big snooze http://www.actionhom...the-big-snooze/ http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/Joe-cleaned-act/story-13090294-detail/story.html
Zingari Posted 21 March 2012 Posted 21 March 2012 Ok ,I won't bother with the Winnebago , I’ll just bring the trailer tent but it will make the Gas BBQ I’m arranging a bit more difficult . I think Trav could arrange a decent night of music for us all and I’m sure AOWW and Lisa wouldn’t mind looking after the burgers and sausage cooking. I’m pencilling Webbo to be in charge of security , because we don’t want drifters and strays wandering in for a free meal . Daggers and Jon the Hat should be given responsibility for fund raising and deciding how best to spend it , etc I think at such late notice we all ought to bring our own drinks though let's party and raise some awareness folks
speedwayson Posted 24 March 2012 Posted 24 March 2012 how was the night down gracey road i was lovly and warm in my bed
Rincewind Posted 24 March 2012 Author Posted 24 March 2012 Cold. 3am colder. There were a few students from Leicester Uni doing it. When I got there there was a bit of confusion then they said I had to sign in and pay a fiver to register. When I was asked if I wanted some cardboard I realized they had misunderstood my reason for being there which was a steward not sleeping out. My fiver was refunded and I was given a jumper and badge. Somehow I think it may have been better sleeping out. I would have been given a blanket cardboard and probably gone in warmer clothing. As it were I was standing out side most of the time occasionally going for a walkabout. They used the area near the toilets as the base and I went in the first aid room around 2.30 with a blanket and had a sleep for a hour or so. Overall I think it was a success. A lot of money was raised which will fund overnight shelters for a year. Just one fact for anyone that did not know. 45% of those sleeping rough are ex-forces.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 25 March 2012 Posted 25 March 2012 What. That people have misconceptions on why people are homeless and sleeping rough? The way they do not know all the facts about all the those on benefits? Correct.
