Anybody hired a car before?

Has anybody hired a car before and how easy was it? Im looking to hire one for a week in July.

It's easy, drivers license, counterpart, bank statement / utility bill and your debit card.

Takes about 15 minutes and away you go.

Look for any defects on the car beofre you leave the car park as they will charge for anything extra they find once you return it.

Beware.

A lot of the big chains are in a price war with each other on rental rates and the prices have become very good on the surface.

However once you make a booking to collect a car the fun begins with more add ons than a chav's bright orange Citroen Saxo.

Once you have safely navigated that minefield take the agent out to the car and go around the whole thing with a fine tooth comb for damage. Ask the agent how significant the damage must be to warrant you being charged ie: Deeper than a surface scratch or bigger than a golf ball etc etc.

Make sure they mark down ALL the damage on the car that would be chargeable on the paperwork and don't sign it until you are happy that everything has been recorded.

I addition make sure they record the fuel level accurately.

These firms now make a lot of there money stitching people up for astronomical fees for re fuelling.. damage etc.

Be very careful.

They will give you a choice of excesses.

The tiny excess will cost you bundles.

The larger excess will cost you not as much, but of course, in the unlikely event of an accident, you get raped.

It'll be pretty much impossible if you happen to be younger than 25.

I had to give a £200 deposit with Enterprise.

Any mark and i'd be screwed. Any accident i'd be screwed, regardless if I wasn't at fault. Most of the time I was too paranoid to leave the car incase of a little dent.

I'd stay clear as if anything at all no matter how small happens they charge a MASSIVE amount of money

You can just pay a damage waiver excess (not a lot, like £15) and it means that if the car does incur any damage you don't get 'raped'...
