Martinshaw Primary School's footballers showed they are a team for the big occasion as they won the npower Kids Cup Championship final at Wembley.

The Groby school, who were representing Leicester City in the final, beat Welsh opponents Romilly Primary in a penalty shoot-out ahead of Saturday's Football League Championship play-off between West Ham United and Blackpool.

There were near misses at either end but the game remained scoreless leading to the nerve-wracking shoot-out.

Luke Pinnick-Thornton stepped up first for Martinshaw and confidently found the net. Romilly, who represented Cardiff City, missed their first penalty and Myles Rastall immediately doubled Martinshaw's advantage.

Goalkeeper Tom Bannaytyne-Bilson then capped his man-of-the-match display by saving the second Welsh penalty to spark the county school's celebrations.

"I can't believe we won," said skipper Finley Armitage. "It was such a close match. We are so proud and can't wait to take the trophy back to our school to show all our friends."

Martinshaw headteacher Andrew Raben added: "It is an unbelievable achievement for a school of our size. The whole experience was unforgettable.

"To be represented in a national competition and to go on and win it is beyond our wildest expectations. I'm proud to the point of bursting."

Our old head teacher at Martinshaw used to be a Forest fan. My entire formative 6 or 7 years were spent ripping him to shreds because of this.

Congrats to my old school!
