Leicfox Posted 10 October 2012 Share Posted 10 October 2012 MARTIN O’NEILL is in no rush to let England Under 21 star Connor Wickham out on loan.Sunderland’s £8m teenager has been linked several times with a loan move to his former club Ipswich Town, but his wages are a stumbling block for Championship clubs looking to sign him on a short-term basis. Wickham has yet to make a first team appearance for Sunderland this season, although he has been an unused sub on several occasions. Instead, he has had to be content with turning out for the Black Cats’ second-string in the new Barclays Premier Under 21 League. O’Neill says he would consider letting Wickham out on loan if the 19-year-old asked to play regular first-team games elsewhere, but at present there is little sign of that. “If he came to me and asked me if I could afford to lose him for a month because he wanted to go out and get three or four games, I’d give it some consideration,†said O’Neill. “The fact is that he is playing at Under 21 level, so it is not lack of fitness that would concern me if he was put into the first team.†Wickham has so far failed to live up to his potential since moving to Wearside last summer, with just a handful of Premier League starts and one goal to his name. http://www.sundaysun...79310-31982289/ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
