Ugh. Playing at the Belfry tomorrow and it looks like it's gonna piss down all day

Bummer. Are you playing the Brabazon?

Joel Dahmen has just bogeyed 4 of his last 6 holes to throw away the Corales. Painful

Gotta love his honesty. Seems like a top bloke

No it was just the Derby. Bit drizzly all day but I shot 3 under my handicap so played well.

Still, it's not an easy course though so 3 under your handicap is good shooting.

The course was in great condition, especially the greens. I definitely want to play the PGA National as that looks really nice too.

The Brabazon is too long and difficult for a weekend hacker like myself.

I found the Brabazon really hard work. Thought I played ok but only ended up with 26 points. It was damp and played its full yardage and it was a struggle.

Great course and a clever design but too long and difficult for me too.

The PGA is the best course round there in my opinion for most golfers. Everyone talks about the Brab but bar 10 & 18 it's actually fairly bland as a course as well and as you've said its just long too.

If you enjoy a test, it's a proper one and by all means I wouldn't put anyone off, just depends what you want from the day!

Played in a medal comp off the whites this evening

Currently tied 71 nett, and my back 9 (44) was pretty good until the 18th (got a 6)

Kicking myself really as I shot an 8 on a tricky par 5

Only issue is HowDidiDo is not allowing me to submit the score 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve been riding the crest of a handicap wave the last few weeks

A combination of some horrendous cards coming off as well as playing some very steady golf by my standards. I’m now consistently shooting low 90’s off the yellows and whites. Each round I’ve still had my standard two or three blow up holes (shooting at 7 or 8)

During the last couple of weeks I’ve played so much golf, but pretty much at all times I’ve had 6 of my best 8 cards being the most recent rounds I’ve played.

On 6th April I was 18.4. I’m now at 16.2 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Spring Stableford comp tomorrow so hoping to just keep the ball in play and do nothing heroic

Great to hear mate.

Your last line is the key to good scoring:

1) Keep it in play (i.e minimalise penalty shots)

2) Hit as many GIR as possible

I don't do it, but I saw a scoring matrix I liked:

2 points - Fairway found

1 points - missed fairway but no obstruction to the green with either line of sight or swing

0 points - missed fairway

-1 - penalty shot incurred/lost ball

1 point per GIR

Adds to an already complicated game though!

I played Royal Porthcawl in their AM-AM this week, a brilliant track, need to play it a few times to know where to go/where to miss. I got suckered into my usual trap of bashing driver off the tee and getting into trouble, would've lost some points in the above scoring matrix!

Yes when I scored well at The Belfry the other week I focused on keeping it away from trouble as much as I could.

The one big mistake I made was when  I had the perfect number for one of my hybrids, and hit it short right and went in the water. Got to lay up in future.

My other poor side is GIR. Especially between the 70-110 yard range. But as a 20 handicapper it's not something I expect to be good at. My distance dispersion with my wedges is poor though and drops me loads of shots due to inconsistent contact. Something I need to work on this year for sure.

I’ve been pulling my wedges terribly as well. I think the face is just a tad too shut so I’ve been working on that. Luckily my chipping is usually pretty decent that often gets me out the shite

I saw this the other day

I do want to get down the range and start a book on a 3/4/5 o clock swing with a PW, SW, GW, LW etc
