ElsieLC Posted 11 February 2013 Posted 11 February 2013 Having explored lots of travel possibilities for a trip to the British Museum at half term with kids I need some advice. Trains are very expensive so wondering about taking the car, parking up in outer london and using local transport when there. Anybody got any useful TRIED AND TESTED experience of this?
marko Posted 11 February 2013 Posted 11 February 2013 We used to drive to Cockfosters and then take the tube in. Massive car park and it was pretty cheap to park all day. You can also please yourself when you come home. Edit: £5 all day parking weekdays/£2 on weekends. http://www.ncp.co.uk/car-park?cpid=800470&name=CockfostersStation

Lamby Posted 11 February 2013 Posted 11 February 2013 Or you can drive to Luton then train it in. Have you tried split ticketing your train tickets to make it cheaper?
Alexikokopops Posted 11 February 2013 Posted 11 February 2013 Cockfosters is good as mentioned. Piccadilly Line is relatively quick into town too, and goes direct to Holborn for the British Museum. Another option (if it's easier to drive to) is Hillingdon, on the other end of the Piccadilly line. I have a friend who lives in Wycombe and, before changing jobs, used to drive there, park for free, and get the tube into town for work. Don't sit on the Piccadilly line all the way to Holborn though, get the Met line to King's Cross and change there. As Lamby mentioned, you could look at splitting your ticket. This website works for walk on fares. If there's a split that makes it cheaper it will tell you. Leicester to London can't be split to make it cheaper but I don't know where you're coming from!
Lamby Posted 11 February 2013 Posted 11 February 2013 I think a split at Luton would make it cheaper, not too sure though.
Fox92 Posted 12 February 2013 Posted 12 February 2013 I've done lots of trips to London. We always go on the train but book it weeks before so it's slightly cheaper. As for hotels, we always stay in a Premier Inn (can't beat it for value and there is one right outside Kings Cross).
