The Year Of The Fox Posted 16 June 2013 Posted 16 June 2013 Trying to wire a fan into my bathroom light switch. Fans on the wall, live and neutral into the fan and I've taped the earth up. However, my fan only works with the light off, when I turn the light on the fan stops. Obviously I thought I had a wire crossed so have swapped them all around and I still get the same outcome. In the light rose there was two red cables one had blue insulation tape on it, to signify neutral I suppose. There are two connections, 1 is COM the other is 1 WAY. Any ideas?
Bert Posted 16 June 2013 Posted 16 June 2013 You shouldn't have a neutral at a switch which could be the problem. Can you not feed the fan from the ceiling rose instead, to take your neutral from the light over to the fan?
The Year Of The Fox Posted 16 June 2013 Author Posted 16 June 2013 You mean use the neutral (assuming the taped up one was a neutral) that was in the light and connect it directly into the fan? It's not possible without me smashing half the ceiling down! (ground floor extension and flat roof) Why would the light work fine if there shouldnt be a neutral at the switch? What wires should go into where in terms of COM and 1 WAY?
The Year Of The Fox Posted 16 June 2013 Author Posted 16 June 2013 I could put a connector block in I suppose if what you meant is what I put above. But that'd only leave one live giing into my light rose?
The Year Of The Fox Posted 16 June 2013 Author Posted 16 June 2013 Just got off the phone to my mate whos a sparky. Says I don't have a neutral at the pull cord (switch) and that's the problem. I didnt realise I shouldve come off the light rather than switch . I need to get a neutral from a switch or socket in the room next door apparentley. Major **** up

And there's no way to get from the connections of the fan to the connections of the ceiling rose? Edit: Just seen other posts. Not what you want!

And there's no way to get from the connections of the fan to the connections of the ceiling rose? I think the red wire was connected into COM and the other red wire with the blue tape around was connected into 1 WAY. So I've with the new 3 core I've put in to get from the pull cord to the fan, I've connected the brown into COM and the blue into 1 WAY
The Year Of The Fox Posted 16 June 2013 Author Posted 16 June 2013 Oh well. What uses up more electric? A fan left on 24/7 or a light? I need to decide which to leave on!!

Rincewind Posted 16 June 2013 Posted 16 June 2013 Stay calm, don't let things get on top of you. Especially the ceiling.
