Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 It's a moral choice as far as I'm concerned. Ask yourself, if you were in need of an organ, would you want to: 1 - Die 2 - Live If you're answer is number 2, then you should be on the register. Spot on I'm on the register, my organs are of absolutely no use to me when I'm gone. I agree with scrapping the list and just having an opt-out scheme. I also think that the opt-out should also opt you out of both giving and receiving organs
leicsmac Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 It's something that should be opt in though, I firmly believe that and better education is needed to secure more donors. I carry a card and I'm tempted to opt out on principle if this comes in. I think you get freedom of choice either way, but would prefer opt-out purely because of the gross amount of organ shortage right now. Do agree there's not enough education about it too, encourage people to know more. I signed up years ago - it's not like you can take it with you, is it? Hell, use my corpsicle in a stand-up act if you think someone will benefit from it. I'll not need it any more. Edit: Not sure how much use you'll get out of the liver once I'm through though.
Les-TA-Jon Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 I think that's a bit simplistic and certainly can't agree with your point that anyone who doesn't want their body butchered after death "wants to actively cause unneccessary suffering" as you put it. Like I say I'm a donor myself but I'm more concerned by state intervention than ever into people's life at the minute, saying we are having your body after death unless you sign a few form is something even the Russian or Chinese governments wouldn't dare enforce. I guess we're both guilty of hyperbolic language then! OK - you got me - I'm a reductionist - i.e I naturally lean towards making things as simple as I can. But I think we this issue, whilst I admit it's not as simple as I outlined, it's quite close. No one's butchering your body, they're just taking your organs (never mind the fact that if they actually are taking your organs, the rest of your body is most likely butchered anyway). But I certainly think it's at the very least morally dubious/questionable to take the stance of wanting to accept organs from others, but not be willing to give your own.
