Paul Lambert 'clubs could do without FA Cup'

It is already spread out over the whole season, isn't it? Preliminary rounds start very early doors.

I was going to make that point in response to the Captain's suggestion. There are 6 preliminary and qualifying rounds prior to the 1st Round "proper", unless they've changed it recently.

Furthermore, those rounds are very important to hundreds of clubs lower down the football pyramid (i.e. non-league clubs), not least financially. The prize money given to non-league clubs for winning 2 or 3 qualifying rounds is enough to make a major difference to their finances at that level, keeping them in business or enabling them to sign 1 or 2 players etc.

Tampering with that would upset a hell of a lot of people, and could be quite damaging to grass-roots football, even if comparatively few players now make it from non-league to Championship level (though Vardy, and Michael Morrison did).

I hope they go down to go some way to disproving this utterly ridiculous theory.

I'm sure Villa will be back to being on course to qualifying for the 'Champions' League now that they're out of this doomed curse of a competition.

They've lost the chance of some real excitement this season so it's back to the weekly struggle.

When Villa got to the League Cup final a few years ago they invaded the pitch after the semi-final, so the fans obviously have a passion for cup football.
