weller54 Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Anyone remember this match?.. I have an image indelibly etched on my brain... A wet, muddy midweek replay at Anfield.. We're under the cosh... Then a cross comes in, Lochhead rises above Yates and scores.. We hold on for a famous 1-0 victory.....
mikey54 Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Yep, remember it well. Allegedly he headed Alan Clarke as well
lancyclaret Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Andy Lochhead was a legend at Burnley and formed a deadly partnership with Willie Irvine - Lochead famously scored 5 in a 7-2 win against Spurs at Turf Moor. Apparently, he was the only player who inspired fear in Norman "Bites Yer Legs" Hunter. Hunter was scared of fouling Lochhead because he knew revenge would come his way twice as bad. I was gutted when we sold AL to Leicester in1967 or 1968? But Burnley sold all their star players before they were 25.

We're under the cosh... Then a cross comes in, Lochhead rises above Yates and scores.. We hold on for a famous 1-0 victory..... Yep. The 'Bald Eagle' strikes again. I can well believe Norman Hunter didn't like tangling with him! He'd put himself , (usually his head), in situations that other players would run a mile to avoid. Didn't he get his cheek bone broken getting kicked in the face going for a header against Sheff Utd? If my memory is correct, (and it may not be), Alan Hodgkinson, the Sheff Utd goalkeeper collided with a post in the same game and knocked himself out temporarily. Needless to say, he didn't go off and finished the 90 minutes!
allotment-fox Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 he even played well in the Air on Mud / Sand just loved to see him climb up in the air from set plays in the box
lancyclaret Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 Lives in Burnley now (or in the nice countryside near Burnley)...writes weekly column for local paper and goes to BFC home matches. Wonder why he did not goback to live in Scotland?
Woollett's Wellies Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 A bit of research revealed that his middle name is Lorimar! I suspect that might have been the reason he was one tough bloke.
st.ives blue Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 I was at this game as a seven old,i can still remember the goal like it was yesterday. After the goal it was like the alamo with shilton saving a penalty from tommy smith in front of the kop.Leicester had a big following that night and many of the coaches had their windows smashed after the game.
dedlock Posted 6 February 2014 Posted 6 February 2014 I was at Uni,went with a Liverpool supporting pal to both games & stood on the Kop for the replay.AL's goal was at the other end but Shilt's penalty save was in front of the kop.The natives were not amused!

I was gutted when we sold AL to Leicester in1967 or 1968? But Burnley sold all their star players before they were 25. Hunter was not quite as hard as his reputation would suggest. I remember him being second best in a one to one fight with Franny Lee in the 70's in a Derby v Leeds match at the Baseball Ground.

I remember him being second best in a one to one fight with Franny Lee in the 70's in a Derby v Leeds match at the Baseball Ground. Hunter was more sneaky than hard - scape his studs down the back of someone's legs when ref not looking.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 11 February 2014 Posted 11 February 2014 i recall that goal. He out jumped Ron Yeats, who was a great player, and the "Bald Eagle" sent it flying into the net.We always seemed to do well against Liverpool in those days.
nickm Posted 11 February 2014 Posted 11 February 2014 I remember going to a midweek fixture and we beat villa 3-2 i think with a lockhead hat trick, might have been the same year but i was very young so could be imagining it!
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 12 February 2014 Posted 12 February 2014 Would have loved to have seen Lochhead in tandem with Frankie Large instead of bloody wimpy Clarke....Can't imagine any defenders relishing facing those two! Hard as bloody nails both of 'em. Glad to hear AL's still fit and well. Fitting that he's involved at Burnley, his spiritual home. Him and Frank Casper were a bloody handful in the 60s! I remember Frank Large's debut against Arsenal. He came from Fulham, and was truly a large lad. He had two front teeth missing' and he really put himself about, and really worried the opposition defences as he hustled and bustled.

Hard as bloody nails both of 'em. Glad to hear AL's still fit and well. Fitting that he's involved at Burnley, his spiritual home. Him and Frank Casper were a bloody handful in the 60s! Casper was a superbly skilful player who was not far off an England place while Lochhead was more about brute strength and aerial power. Casper and Lochhead did not play that much together as AL was transferred to Leicester and FC only joined Burnley in 67 (or 68?). Casper was at his peak when he was 29 in the 1973/74 season before his career was ended by a crippling tackle by Norma Hunter at Elland Road in April 74 - a match Burnley won 4-1. The following week a half-fit Casper was risked in the FA Cup semi against relegation threatened Newcastle at Hillsborough and Burnley lost 2-0. In the other semi, Leicester lost to Liverpool.
