Champions League Qualifiers

Recommended Posts

I'm starting this topic because for the first time in many, many years, two Swiss teams have the chance of reaching the Champions League. Yes, you read right. Swiss teams. Football. You know. The game.

FC Basle defeated German side Werder Bremen (finished 2nd last season in the Bundesliga) 2-1 at home. The away game oop north will be a toughie, Werder Bremen has one of the best fronts with Klose and Klasnic. A draw would suffice... Can they do it? Basle's last appearance in the CL was in 2002/03 campaign, after winning against Celtic Glasgow in the qualifiers.

A europeanwide unknown little side called FC Thun heads back to the Stade De Suisse in Berne, the nation's capital. More than 30'000 tickets have been sold. There is a massive euphoria going on and chances are high that this compact team will defeat Swedish side Malmo FF. Thun won away in Sweden 1-0, after kicking 30 million pounds heavy Dynamo Kiev out of the competition. It would be the first appearance in the CL for this small team out of the Berne hinterland.

You may not have noticed this, but it's possible that both teams will face English sides in the Group Phase.

Oh, and which teams will qualify for the next round in your eyes?

Because Liverpool arent supposed to be in the Champions League. UEFA had to change the rules to accomodate the current holders. It had never happened that the champions league winner had'nt qualified via their respective leagues. Therefore because Liverpool kicked up a fuss, UEFA allowed them entry but they had to go through the complete Champions League qualification process. Whereas Everton and Man Utd go straight to the 3rd round because the 3rd and 4th places get a bye to that round.

Hope that makes sense ;)

Well, one step is already made.

FC Thun defeated Malmo FF 3-0 in front of almost 32'000 fans in the new Stade de Suisse in Berne, the Swiss capital city. Bernardi and Lustrinelli twice (the second was a beautiful lob over Asper) made the difference. The Swedes were never a real threat and looked lacklustre.

So they are in the Champions League for the very first time. Kudos!

Celebrations back home in Thun had to be postponed due to the heavy floodings that are still going on in various parts in Central Europe.

Sadly Brøndby lost out to Ajax yesterday going out 5-3 on aggregate. A very entertaining tie. Brøndby actually took the lead yesterday in the first half and were leading 3-2 on agg, but Ajax pulled themselves together after the break and scored twice in the last 10 minutes...oh well, next year maybe..

Wisla lost to Panathinaikos

It's such a shame, can you believe they played equally well (two really great games) and the difference was 3:1 first in favour of Wisla and then 4:1 in favour of PAO. So it is another (10th) season wthout any Polish club in the CL... "we'll have to wait until next years then." that's the sentene most often spoke every year <_< Really sad, but this will be a weird CL with Artmedia and Thun anyway...

The Liverpool-Chelsea games will be the thing in this year's group stage I guess. Unless Liverpool plays like they did to CSKA Sofia two days ago

Personally I'd love to see how Patrzalka Bratyslawa will do... they destroyed Celtic once, now they will clash with Rangers :)
