Louise Posted 25 August 2005 Posted 25 August 2005 Defender joins the City casualty list by Andy Mann Leicester City defender Patrik Gerrbrand will be out until next month with an ankle injury sustained in the Carling Cup victory at Bury. The Swedish centre-back, who was making his City debut, was stretchered off after being hurt in the first half of the 3-0 win. Gerrbrand has torn ankle ligaments that will sideline him for a number of weeks. It is a blow for the 24-year-old, and for the club who will also be without Stephen Hughes until next month. Manager Craig Levein said City are now looking to get stylish midfielder Hughes, who has also been out with an ankle injury, fully fit for the resumption of league football after next week's international break. Levein said: "Patrik has torn his ankle ligament. We don't know exactly how serious it is but he will certainly not play until the middle of next month. "It's a blow for the club and for him. He has waited patiently to get an opportunity and was doing very well. "Before he arrived with us he had played 12 first-team matches because his season in Sweden had started. He had been eager to play, so it's a blow." He added: "With Hughes, the plan is to get him 100-per-cent fit for after the international break." Gerrbrand was joined on the treatment table after the Bury game by winger Joe Hamill, who suffered a dead-leg, and Nils-Eric Johansson, who had a suspected broken nose but is expected to be fit for the home game against Luton on Saturday. Despite the combative approach from Bury, Levein was not looking to point the finger following the injuries. "When you go into cup ties you have to expect that the team who are the underdogs will be physical to try to win the game," he said. On a brighter note, Levein was expecting top scorer David Connolly, who has been sidelined with a thigh strain, to train today after coming through a session on Tuesday. The striker should be fit for Luton, while Momo Sylla and Rab Douglas are also expected to be available. link So it looks like Gerrbrand will not be available until the Wolves game at the earliest, whereas Hughes should be back for the Sheffield Wednesday game if all goes well.
Guest Posted 25 August 2005 Posted 25 August 2005 It looked worse on Tuesday night. I hate to see players stretchered off.
Hitesh Posted 25 August 2005 Posted 25 August 2005 Not good news really! Was hoping to see Hughes back before the internationals, but i guess it is better to have him at 100% rather than 80% and then have the risk of the injury returning.

Hullfox Posted 25 August 2005 Posted 25 August 2005 It looked worse on Tuesday night. I hate to see players stretchered off. 163299[/snapback] It's always a bad sight. However, he was sitting up which is good. What was funny though was the St Johns Ambulance man who was obviously old and unfit and needed attention himself after carrying Gerrbrand round to the tunnel.
Thracian Posted 25 August 2005 Posted 25 August 2005 Bet Gerrbrand's cheesed off. He'd been [laying regularly, then signs for City, can't get a game in a team with a defence that ships goals and when he finally gets a grade C match he gets injured. Bet he wonders why he ever left home! As for three weeks, as I always say about injured players at the City, I'll believe it when I see it.
